CHKDSK cannot run on Windows 7

Claire2886 Posted messages 12 Status Member -
Hello,

Since the beginning of the week, when I turn on my computer, I get a black screen with white text that says: "The integrity of one of your disks needs to be checked..." then after 10 seconds "Unable to open the volume for direct access. Autochk cannot run due to an error caused by a recently installed software package. An unspecified error occurred (766f6c756d652e63 3f1)"

My computer then starts up normally.

I first tried to run CHKSDK at startup, but without success. I still get the same black screen and no verification is possible... the computer restarts without performing any checks.

I tried to do a restore, but I only have restore points after my issue... The other restore point is the date of purchase of my computer (2012).

On CrystalDiskInfo, I have a warning message (C5 number of unstable sectors, current: 100, max: 100, threshold: 0, raw value: 8).

On HDTune, I have very little information on the HDD and the "health" page is empty.

Can you help me?
Is my HDD nearing the end of its life?

Thank you in advance.

Configuration: Windows 7 / Firefox 41.0

Hi, upon reading the CrystalDisk results, your disk is indeed in poor condition.
Don't you notice any slowdowns when you use it?
Is the disk not making any abnormal noises?

Sometimes there are slowdowns, yes, but it's been quite a while...
As for the noise... it has been there since I bought it... it "grinds".

So, according to you, should I change the HDD?
The problem is that I don't have a Windows 7 CD and I can't download an ISO because when I enter the product number... I'm told to contact the supplier (Samsung). (I've contacted them but still no news...)

You could try a chkdsk in the command prompt as an administrator.

      The command to type is

      chkdsk c: /f /r

I can try again, but when I tried a few days ago, it didn't work... always the same message at startup saying: unable to open the volume for direct access. Autochk cannot run due to an error generated by a recently installed software package. An unspecified error occurred (766f6c756d652e63 3f1)

And if I can create an image of my system on an external hard drive, isn't that better?

Well, personally I would see acquiring a new drive to replace yours that is failing. As for cloning the drive, we can do it in ways other than through the system image.
I mentioned this mainly in case you had space on a drive. But don’t go buying both an external drive and an internal drive at the same time.

    7)

Laptop with pre-installed Windows recovery partition RECOVERY

6 options, there are 5 options in the photo.

choose option number 5 hence COMMAND PROMPT

    8) Normal startup command prompt run as administrator I will have this

    C:\Windows\system32>

Booting under WINRE Windows I will have this
    X:\Windows\system32>

Booting from ISO external support Windows I will have this

    X:\Sources>

    9) After clicking REPAIR COMPUTER so after loading Windows check the location of Windows C: or D:

    so I choose Command Prompt
    Windows 7 on C:

    10)
    X:\windows\system32> C:
    I type C: I press ENTER

    the system switches to C:
    C:\> I type dir
    C:\>dir
    the system displays system directories

ok it's the right drive it doesn't show anything the files are in D so type D:

    C:\>chkdsk /f /r or chkdsk /c /f I press ENTER

between chkdsk and /f and /r there is a space

between chkdsk and /c and /f there is a space
Would you like to force the dismount of this volume? (Y/N) Y
    • the system starts the scan directly from the command prompt wait and especially monitor the final report

    bad sectors or not?

be careful depending on the size of the selected drive and especially its condition
end of scan close the command prompt window directly
    • the system does not start the scan directly, it will start the scan on the next reboot

    exit the command prompt
C:\>exit press ENTER then click on RESTART

PS: launch a system image before performing a disk scan? yes why not!

you should not wait for an anomaly like on your machine to launch a system image

System image thus duplicating its hard drive will also duplicate the anomaly(s).

Infected system if I launch a system image the malware, Trojan horse, etc. will also be part of the journey.

what's the point of launching a system image under a damaged or infected system.

Well, we just have to try FISQ's methods.
I agree with you about the system image; if the computer is infected or damaged, it serves little purpose. But it's also always adjustable later in case the hard drive is fragile.
    Well done, FISQ.

The verification took place in a few seconds...
Here is the final screen. I then restarted and received the same error message that I've had from the beginning.

Right now I'm using a Windows Phone to communicate, so your screenshot shows up but I can't tell you about the image quality.
I'll be back in half an hour on the PC.
      Question
Is it an English Windows with a French update pack?

Okay no worries, and it's true that my photo wasn't taken very well...
As for Windows, I don't know... but the advanced options were in English and I set the language to French but it didn't change anything... Everything was still in English in the recovery environment...
When I go to the control panel it says that I have: Windows 7 Home Premium - Service Pack 1 but I don't know if it's in English.

    Hi,

See this FAQ: Autochk cannot run due to an error.

As mentioned, it would be good to check the SMART information.
If your hard drive has issues, you may have redundant autochk errors.

    31 files...

ok patient and send a screenshot at the end of the analysis like your first screenshot

end of the analysis close the Command Prompt explorer directly
basically do not type anything "D:\>_ do not type anything " when closing from the window you will switch to the recovery options so take the opportunity to click on RESTART

you have a total of 4KB in bad sectors ->bad sector

did you restart your PC then?
OK turn off your PC it deserves a good rest!

After uninstall all the analysis software installed by you, optimization type software, use only one antivirus!

Open the command prompt from the desktop in administrator mode and then run the System File Checker.

      C:\Windows\system32> SFC /SCANNOW
      then press ENTER
      there's a space between SFC & /SCANNOW
like check disk it will display a report about the current state of system files
      a)Good
The Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.)

      b) Thank you SFC /SCANNOW
The Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and was able to repair them. Details are provided in the CBS.Log %WinDir%\Logs\CBS\CBS.log.

      c)Something is wrong!

The Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files, but was unable to fix some of them. Details are provided in the CBS.Log %WinDir%\Logs\CBS\CBS.log.

      C:\windows\system32>EXIT
      press ENTER

Once again, we need to look at the SMART reports
If you have faulty sectors, the troubleshooting steps provided are useless.
If the disk is dying, the problems will come back.

The number of defective sectors has reached the threshold (C5).
You are at 100, the maximum is 100.
This is therefore not a good sign.

If you have important data, you need to back it up to an external drive.

It is likely to continue degrading, which will probably lead to slowdowns of the computer and crashes.
You need to monitor the Current column of C5.
If it starts to increase too much, the drive will die.

it's not the maximum value that can be reached, it's the maximum value that has been recorded, I think.
You will have new bad sectors if the disk fails and given the way things are going, that's likely, so it should increase, I think.
