External hard drive not responding anymore

Question

Hello everyone I have an external hard drive from Mémup and my Acer PC running Vista Home no longer detects it When I plug it in, the green light on the drive comes on, a disk reader noise starts, then the light blinks and the drive freezes, making the same sequence of noises as if it were stuck. Additionally, when I go to My Computer on my PC, it doesn't appear, and as if that weren't enough, my PC displays at the top of the taskbar "the program is not responding" and it freezes my PC If anyone can help me, that would be great because I have all the photos of my kids when they were little on it, I’m so frustrated!!!! Thank you

Hello,  I can’t stress this enough... you need to have backups of all your personal documents... Everything in duplicate...  -- Has this drive ever worked on this PC..?  --- The program is not responding.. which program is it..?? Because, even if the photos are lost on the external drive, that doesn’t stop the programs from functioning.... Re,  So, it's a laptop... if your BIOS is set to boot from USB before the hard drive, it's normal for it to behave like that.  --- I advise you to try with a Y cable, this issue is very common with USB drives... The current from USB ports being limited to 500mA, it's often not enough, and with two ports, you get double the current and everything works again...  --- Otherwise, you need to open the USB enclosure, take out the internal drive to place it in a tower... and then it should work...  -- Otherwise, it’s really broken and it will be very complicated to recover the photos... Especially if it fell...???

Welcome to the Forum, Ericdisque :)  I'm chiming in to add my two cents ... It is true that sometimes the PC freeze could be caused by hardware conflicts, and for this reason, it is recommended to start the PC with a minimum of peripherals ... Sometimes, if an external hard drive is connected to the computer during the restart, the boot stops on a message like "Auto-detecting USB Mass Storage Devices ... Device #1," for example. In such cases, it is advised to make a setting in the BIOS: Advanced > Chipsets > Set "Legacy USB storage" to disabled.  Does the external hard drive show the same behavior when connected to another machine? As for disassembling the case of an external hard drive, I just want to add an important point ... Such manipulations void the warranty, on one hand, and on the other hand, you risk damaging the drive inside. Sometimes, depending on the hard drive manufacturer, the interface inside the case might be SATA but could also not be, which would make it impossible to connect the drive either directly to the motherboard of a PC or to put it in another case. For these reasons, such manipulations are not recommended, and if one decides to do them, it is at their own risk.  @Ericdisque, have you thought about accessing the hard drive's content via a Linux Live CD? If you haven't done it yet, I would encourage you to proceed with that.
