Mysterious bug when creating index with concordance table

Hello,
I'm using Word 2010.
I have a concordance table that seems perfect.
However, when I try to insert the index for auto-marking, a window opens telling me that "no index has been marked" or "no marked index entry."
What's curious is that in my document, the entries are clearly marked with "XE," and the paragraph marks ¶ are displayed.
Another curious thing: when I hide the paragraph marks ¶, all the index marks disappear.
Normally, I should get a message indicating the number of marked entries, then be able to insert the created index where my cursor is at the end of the document...
I don't understand what's blocking...
And you? Any idea about the small detail that is causing the issue?
Thank you for your help because I'm at my wits' end.

    Good evening,

You say you have a matching file that is supposedly perfect. What does "supposedly" mean? What is this file like?

Then what I don't understand well is that you say you received the message "no index has been marked" after doing "insert index for auto marking." Didn't you have the time to indicate what the matching file is?

Next, not a curious thing at all: When you hide the paragraph marks (which are the non-printable characters), all index marks disappear. This is normal: the marks are hidden characters and they are not meant to be printed. So, by default, when you hide non-printable characters, you also hide the index entries.

Finally, you say that normally, you should receive one message indicating the number of marked entries: no, Word does not indicate anything to you. But if the entries have been marked, you should be able to insert your index.

In conclusion, it's difficult to inform you without knowing what the indexing file is like and exactly how you're proceeding.

      Hello,

Actually, I have a Word table with 2 columns for automatic indexing. In the left column (keywords to search), the entries (nothing in front or behind) have been entered to put the "XE". In the right column, I have the names as I want them to be displayed. Looking at the current templates (screenshots from tutorials), my table is therefore formally identical.
Then, when I go to my 200-page document and click "insert index" for auto marking, the window opens, I select my file with the concordance table.
There, after a few seconds, a window opens and tells me basically "no index entries marked".
However, in my 200-page document, I do have my XE everywhere on my search words, with the paragraph marks ¶ as well
I can't go any further since it's impossible to insert the index afterward because the entries are deemed to not have been marked and indeed, when I want to insert it (at the end of the document, where I place my cursor), it starts over: a window with the "auto marking" tab, etc.

The worst part is that in an older version of this document, I had made a table to test the creation of an index, and the marking and insertion of the index was done correctly with alphabetical order, proper names, and their associated pages...

So, in the current case, it gets stuck in the auto marking phase.
      And I don't see why.
The only clue I have is that when I reopen my concordance table, sometimes the "XE" entries are no longer there and I have to reopen the index entry window to try to make them reappear, but probably has nothing to do with it?

I'm returning to your "only" hint: you say "when I reopen my concordance table, sometimes there are no more 'XE'... But, in the concordance file, there are no XE fields....
Could you show me your concordance table? (https://www.cjoint.com/ )

        Good evening,
So, you mean that once entered, the XE fields no longer appear because they still exist but are hidden?
        So basically, I just understood...
Indeed, in my 200-page document, when I replace a name on the cover page with xxx because I want that name only in the body (the cited authors are also part of the people mentioned on the cover page), Word still manages to mark it (it recognizes it) and therefore, in the document, the entries (despite what the window says) are indeed marked.
So, when I insert the index (insert the index, choose preferences then OK), the index does appear in alphabetical order.
In short, my concordance table is perfectly “fine”, and it’s almost resolved.
Thank you very much for this exchange that helped me understand the source of the confusion.
The big question that remains, however, is: why on earth does this window pop up to tell me “no index entries marked”? Is it because I created a bug by doing it several times?

      Hello,

Oh but yes !!!! It's true that you have used the concordance file several times. The first time, your entries were indeed marked, but the second time, there is nothing left to mark since it has already been done, hence your message saying "no index entry has been marked"... Because Word is quite intelligent ;))) if it sees that the entry already exists, it doesn't redo it; it would be annoying to double/triple... the same entries.

For your information, I have written a complete article on indexes here:

    What a story nonetheless...
But it's resolved and you guided me well towards the solution

    Thank you very much.
