Unlinking index entries in footnotes

Solved

Hello,

I am working on an index created in Word and I have a question regarding the tagging of entries in footnotes.

I would like to know if it is possible, when automatically generating an index, to activate a function that would prevent footnotes from being included?
For example, I want to tag the term "Paris" in the body of the text, but not in the footnotes because it is not relevant since it mostly refers to the place of publication in bibliographic mentions (Paris: editions...)

Thank you,
Laura

    Hello Laura,

It's true that it's not necessarily relevant, but it can be!! :)
In any case, there is no option for that.

That said, here is a simple solution to implement if you want to have no index tags in the footnotes. I'll explain it for Windows; you can see if it works the same on Mac (on Mac it’s often more troublesome because the software is not as advanced).

You insert your tags normally without worrying about your notes. Once that's done, you can do a Find-Replace to remove the tags from the notes:

    - Open the Find-Replace dialog box.
    - In the Find field, put ^d XE
On Mac, you'll need to find the equivalent (^d is the field code, and XE is for Index).
    - With your cursor still in the Find field, click on Format then Styles, and find "Footnote"
    - In the Replace field, leave it empty.

You can start the replacement. Word will remove all tags that have the Footnote style (and therefore logically located at the bottom of the page).

If you don't want to remove all the tags, but only "Paris" for example, you simply need to add it in the search field (with the quotes):
    ^d XE "Paris"

It's unnecessary to ask me your questions privately. I won’t answer them.

    Hello m@rina,

Thank you very much for your reply!
The ^d field code worked perfectly on Mac as well. I even realized that by placing my cursor directly in my footnotes, the search for the find/replace command only occurred in the notes, which avoids the step format > styles > footnotes.

Thank you so much, it's a great help!
