checksum error in winrar

Question

Hello everyone,

since I changed my PC for a more powerful one, I've been encountering a recurring problem when I want to decompress files with WinRAR.

Every time I try to decompress a file with WinRAR, there are several parts, or even all the parts in some cases, where it gives me a checksum error.

I've been trying to find a solution for several weeks now, but nothing works.

I've tried it on my different internal hard drives, and the same problem persists.

For the same file, it worked perfectly on my old PC and doesn't work anymore on the new one.

I tried with WinZip, and the problem is the same.

If anyone has any ideas because I'm really starting to despair.

Hello

The file you downloaded may not be complete. It might be missing a few bytes for the file to be truly complete.
Try downloading your compressed file again if it was found online.
You can also try opening the file with another non-proprietary software like 7-zip, which you can find either on CCM in the downloading section ( https://www.commentcamarche.net/telecharger/utilitaires/2197-7-zip/ ) or on the main site ( https://www.7-zip.org/ ) or on the French site ( https://www.7-zip.fr/ )

Personally, I mostly use 7-zip and occasionally PeaZip; but it’s been a long time since WinRAR, WinZip... have run on my PC.
The few times I had a problem opening compressed files, it was a downloading issue (thus an incomplete file).

I don't think the file is incomplete; I've downloaded it several times and I'm still having the same issue.

Moreover, this particular file consists of 16 parts, 15 of 1000 MB and 1 of about 500 MB.
When I decompress, the parts that give me an error are completely random.
For example, the first time I decompress it says that parts 5-9-14-15, for instance, are corrupted. I re-download these parts, and when I decompress a second time, it will be parts 3-11-16, for example, that are corrupted, even though they weren’t before. This continues without ever yielding a correct result.

I'll re-download and still try with the software you suggested.

I was wondering if a hardware problem could be the cause, like a slightly damaged hard drive or something; is that possible?

Yes, a hard drive issue can lead to the corruption of your archives. To check the quality of your hard drive, try to find the utility from the manufacturer of your hard drive. You can also check, for example, with the Ultimate Boot CD ( https://www.ultimatebootcd.com/download.html )
The problem may also arise from a poor quality of your connection (wifi/ethernet) or even from the quality of your ADSL/fiber/cable line...

The issue can also be due to an incompatibility between your WinZip/WinRAR, which may be a bit old, and the utility that created the archives.
Have you checked the compatibility of the different hosts (file part1 identical whether it's on host 1 or host 2...)?
Have you gone through all the different comments that followed the "article" where you found the various links? And did any of them mention the same problem?

connection level is fine, it's correct.

for winrar, I have the latest 64-bit version that is compatible with my win 7 64-bit.

no comments on the forum where I got the file

however, when I decompress a small file like 500 MB it works

I will check the quality of the disk, I ran a CHKDSK but it didn't find any errors, but I don't know if it's really effective.

The manufacturer's utilities (SeaTools for Seagate drives...) won't run on a competitor's disk; however, they seem to be a bit more sensitive (from what I've seen) than the generic Windows utility.

I forgot another possibility: it could also be your RAM sticks. In the Ultimate Boot CD, there are also Memtest86 and Memtest86+ to test the RAM (these two programs take more or less time depending on the amount of RAM to be tested). You need to do at least one complete pass to test all of the RAM, but it's advisable to do a few more to confirm if the first pass finds nothing. There is also the built-in RAM tester in Windows 7, but I prefer to use Memtest; I'm more accustomed to that software.
If a RAM stick is defective, it could explain the decompression issues as well.

I just tried downloading a smaller file of 2.5 GB split into three parts on another internal hard drive, and it works perfectly, whereas it wasn't working when downloading to the drive I usually use.
I did the same thing with my 16 GB file that is causing me issues, I'm waiting for the download to finish and I'll test that.
If it doesn't work, I'll use Ultimate Boot CD to see what the problem is.

I'll keep you updated tomorrow.
