Hello,

A few weeks ago, I had a problem with my computer. There were many beeps at startup, and it wouldn't boot. So, I was a bit too lazy to troubleshoot right away, I had a lot of work to do, and I was booting from a live USB. Each time I booted, there was an error message regarding the SATA.
Anyway. I bought another computer, the old one was over 6 years old, as well as a SATA enclosure to retrieve the data from the old one.
The problem is when I connect my hard drive via USB, initialization fails, cyclic redundancy error.
And when I type list disk in the cmd, I can see my hard drive, but it shows a size of 0 bytes. So…question. Is my hard drive just dead, or is there a solution?

Thank you for your attention.

Configuration: Windows 7 / Chrome 41.0.2272.89

Hello Wildala,

Indeed, the cyclic redundancy error could mean that your hard drive is dead...
I suggest you download the manufacturer's diagnostic tool to check its integrity. Here's a little article: https://www.commentcamarche.net/faq/39851-disque-dur-etat-de-sante-et-garantie

You could run a chkdsk which helps to check and repair errors on the disk.
Two options:
via the Command Prompt
Start > Run > cmd.exe > enter chkdsk /R X (where X represents the letter of your hard drive)
or via the graphical interface
Right-click on the relevant HDD > Properties > Tools > Error checking > click on Check now > check both boxes
More info here: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/update-a-driver-for-hardware-that-isn-t-working-properly-5c4da477-59fb-355b-45d6-1aa742268c9b

Have you tried the disk on another computer and another port?

What information is shown in Disk Management?

Best regards,

Given that the disk was no longer recognized, it was impossible to run a chkdsk.
In light of the beeps at startup of the disk, and especially since it no longer spins, I concluded that the hard drive is simply dead.
Thank you nevertheless for your help.

It's really too bad...
You could always try to recover the data using data recovery software or a Linux Live CD... There's no guarantee, but nothing prevents you from giving it a shot if you have the time!
Here are two articles that might provide you with useful information:
