Hello,
I'm at my wit's end! Can anyone help me?
I'm in the middle of writing my thesis. One file per chapter with figures, tables, references, table of contents, in short, all those automatic fields that are really handy but seem to cause problems.
My file is fine when I open it with Word. As soon as I want to print it or save it as a .pdf, the references (and especially the ones in parentheses) don't stay in place. For example, instead of having:
We notice that blah blah blah blah (Figure 1) blah blah
The reference doesn't stay in the sentence:
We notice that blah blah blah blah (
Figure 1) blah blah
And sometimes, the style changes (the normal style becomes caption). There must be something I'm missing, but what?
A big thank you in advance to those who have the solution to this problem!
I'm on Windows 8 - I believe I'm using Word 2010.
Configuration: Windows / Chrome 40.0.2214.115

Hello popoi8
In the excerpt of the document you attached, I see issues with the references (I'm not talking about footnotes).
In this excerpt, there are two references: the first refers to an entire table, and since the reference is at the bottom of the page, it gets cut off.
The second reference refers to something that does not exist, at least in this excerpt.
So it's difficult to generalize the problems.
That said, to make a reference:
- either we use a title, and then we don't need to create a bookmark.
- or we create a bookmark on the text to be referenced and make the reference to that bookmark.
The reference can relate to the title number, the page number, or the bookmarked text...
If you want to refer to the bookmarked text, generally, it's not a long text, and it's not like you did with an entire table.
So, already look at it from that side.

Good evening
Check if the caption doesn't contain a paragraph break. I'm experiencing the same issue when inserting a paragraph after the Figure label, but you would have seen the paragraph break because it is visible
Press Alt F9 to view the field code as well
Otherwise, we should look at a small anonymized part of the page with the issue using https://www.cjoint.com/

Hello,
Thank you for your quick response. I tried to
-replace the parentheses with brackets, change the styles, add section breaks, but nothing works.
I uploaded the file using the site you recommended:
https://www.cjoint.com/?3BBmKqLlVg6
if you have a solution, I would really appreciate it because I need to print this document. My thesis is currently 450 pages long and I really don't want to do the references manually..
Thank you so much for your help!

Thank you, thank you, and thank you!
Yes, I indeed understood where the problem comes from. Embarrassed by a lack of space between the figures and the caption, I was adding a space. As a result, the references pointed to the space instead of the caption. I added my space after the figures in automatic mode in the style settings, and everything is back in order!
I owe you a huge favor. You can't imagine how much you have saved my day and the end of my thesis writing!

I also think: didn't you copy and paste some references?
I was just testing.
The cross-references are a bit lost here.
To see this, click on the cross-reference Table 1, the hyperlink leads to the end of the table and not to the caption.
Similarly, for the second table, the cross-reference goes to the first line of the table where the text is displayed instead of the caption and includes the table in the field.
By redoing the cross-reference to the caption, the reference is restored.
Captions are meant to illustrate objects like figures, tables... A test: by converting Table 1 into a real table, it immediately restores the cross-reference.
