Black screen bug on Sony Xperia Z3

Hello,

It has been a week since I could use my Z3 because it suddenly displayed a black screen while in use. I tried to restart it, but the screen remains black (please note that the screen is on, and the touch functionality works because I feel vibrations under my fingers).

I tried restarting the smartphone with the volume up + On/Off buttons without success.

I then used Sony's companion software to update the device and reset it to factory settings, but that also didn't work.

Have you encountered this situation with your Z3?

  Lol, you can't remove the battery, the mobile is one solid piece and it's better not to take it apart, especially if it's still under warranty.

It's the proximity sensor that's stuck; you need to press firmly at the top right of the screen during the call. That should normally unlock it.

  Thank you very much for the tip, I had the same problem, removing the screen protector and forcing the restart was enough to unlock the screen!

  Hello. Is your problem with the selfie camera or the normal one? Because for me, I have this issue, but when I want to take "real" photos with my Xperia X. I took a photo and 5 minutes later, when I wanted to take another one, it was over—black screen and impossible to take a photo. I'm definitely in camera mode with the icon to take the photo, etc., but it only works for selfies, not for normal photos. Did you have the same problem? I don't have a film but a sliding case; do you think that blocks the field of vision? While for the past 6 months it was working perfectly fine.
  Thank you for your help... Being in New York, let me tell you that I feel like crying for not being able to take photos anymore.

  Indeed my Sony Xperia Z3 is unlocked, no more problems for making calls.
  It's a pity I didn't read you earlier, it would have saved me from buying a Samsung A 2016, fortunately not too expensive.

  No, the only solution I see is to have it replaced by a professional freelancer, the phone still being under warranty but the repair time being very long (sending the phone, receiving it, inspection, repair, then returning the phone)...... I prefer to pay €150 and have my phone repaired in 1 hour rather than sending it in for after-sales service, waiting 3 weeks, depositing a security check, and having a loaner phone that is unimpressive, with the risk of not being covered for X reason. Thank you Sony for your dust-proof, underwater, and unbreakable phone!

  I finally contacted Sony to have them take it back for repair. It takes 5 to 10 days for repair or replacement. However, if anyone has technical feedback on this issue, please let us know, in case it happens again after the warranty period...

  Aren't you using a screen protector just before having this issue? Because it's probably related to the proximity sensor (the phone thinks you still have it to your ear and turns off the screen to save energy). This sensor is located at the top of the phone, and there might be something obstructing it (dust, inappropriate screen protector...).

Hello!

So here it is, I had the same problem but I managed to fix it. Indeed, Sony Xperia Z3 (I don’t know if the previous models have it too) have a specialty: when someone calls you and you put the phone to your ear, it goes to sleep and displays a black screen, which is to save battery.

So this problem arises when you have a screen protector; even though there are holes in the screen protector that are supposed to avoid interfering, the sensor has a very large detection angle, so the bug appears and the phone acts as if it were always held to the ear.

In short, to remove the problem, all you need to do is take off the screen protector. It may happen that even then the problem persists, no worries, you just have to wait. For my part, I had to wait a whole day and restart it often with the power button + volume up (hold) for it to display. That’s how I solved my black screen issue, but I don’t know if it will work for you.

(P.S.: it hurt my ass because I had a tempered glass protector and I paid €30 for it.)

  Thank you for your response (Power + volume up button held down). I had a similar problem and it worked. My screen would automatically go to sleep as soon as I passed my hand or something else in front of it. Whether I was on a call or just handling my phone. Yet I checked, the proximity sensor was turned off... Simple bug? Pure coincidence?... Anyway, thanks to you I was able to solve my problem. Thx!

  same problem with my Sony Xperia Z5 Compact, you need to remove the protective film from the phone) at least cut it at the sensor level*camera) and it works again.
  The film blocks the sensor: so when you make a call, it's like holding the phone to your ear, the screen goes into power-saving mode.

  Oh yes, I have two Z3s. Last night, the white one did the same thing with its screen. I managed to get it running again by playing with the charger and the power button; it worked right away, but the other one I can't debug at all. Tomorrow, it's off to SFR.
