What is an external call

Hello,
I received an "External Call" on my landline, but I'm not quite sure what that is. Could someone clarify it for me?
Thank you for your responses
Have a good evening!

Here is the explanation. This is an image of page 7 of the Gigaset A400 manual.

The difference between "Unknown," "External call," and "Private call" is a combination of your personal display choices, the caller's choices, and how each telephone operator handles these choices.

This issue is not resolved, there are many fantasies or ignorance in these responses, the most serious seems to be that of anonymous, so I will paste it below.
One of the solutions could be to reset the Box, but that may not be enough. My last "external call" did come through at 6:50 PM, Robots? Yes, but why and for what purpose? I have LaBox Numéricable

The answer is ridiculous! So the issue remains unresolved...
No, an "external call" is not a call from a number that isn't in the directory; in that case, the number displays or it says "private number" or "unknown call."
If you answer, it hangs up...
Apparently, these are telemarketers and it's a platform that calls us, it's just that we don't answer as quickly as others...
Unlike hidden calls, these calls do not appear in the call log and often even, the Orange voicemail does not indicate them, so we only know if we are home at the time of the calls (most often around 11:50 AM, 3:50 PM, and 6:50 PM).
Ignoring the call or answering/hanging up seems to be the simplest reaction.
Personally, I feel that this is simply a means of pressure from the operators to get us to commit to the paid filtering service... Note that my mother, having cracked, signed up and still receives calls from telemarketers!]

NB: I had a "similar" problem with 11-digit numbers (it seems to be Skype or "internet calls"), which I resolved by purchasing the Gigaset with a blacklist; the numbers on the list can no longer call back. However, I have no idea how to block these "external calls," fortunately rare but concerning, and what if it rings at night?

On the other hand, I don't see any interest for the ISP; there is no paid (or free) system at Numericable to protect against this...

Hello phill443, I hope you can help me. I'm receiving external calls and I've learned that it’s my family calling. When I get these calls, I hesitate to answer, which is annoying because they need to inform me about a serious matter happening in the family. Could you tell me what I should do to prevent external calls from showing up? Thank you very much.
