The difference between "Unknown," "External call," and "Private call" is a combination of your personal display choices, the caller's choices, and how each telephone operator handles these choices.

The response is ridiculous! So the issue remains unresolved...
No, an "external call" is not a call from a number that is not in the directory; in this case, the number shows up or it says "hidden number" or "unknown call."
If you answer, it hangs up...
Apparently, these are telemarketers and it’s a platform that calls us; it’s just that we don’t answer as quickly as others...
Unlike hidden calls, these calls do not appear in the call log and often, even the orange voicemail does not indicate them, so you only know if you are at home at the time of the calls (most often around 11:50 AM, 3:50 PM, and 6:50 PM).
Ignoring the call or answering/hanging up seems to be the simplest reaction.
Personally, I feel that it’s simply a way for the operators to pressure us into subscribing to the paid filtering service... It’s worth noting that my mother, having cracked under pressure, has signed up and still receives calls from telemarketers!

Hello,
I also have the "external call" display on some calls; in fact, I have an unbundled line that has 2 call numbers: my old France Télécom number which I requested to be ported and a number that my operator assigned to me (the number starting with 09 ..). If someone calls the France Télécom number (03 83 ....), I see my caller's number, but if I receive a call on the number starting with 09, it appears as "external call," and it is this last number that is listed in the directory.

According to my phone's manual, you need to ask your operator to activate the caller ID service, but the calling number must also be authorized by its own operator's CLI service. My own registered numbers were noted as external calls. That's been sorted since..... Except for my brother who didn't check the CLI box with his operator.... Same issue with an external call. Now I no longer answer, but it keeps ringing incessantly. I put it on mute, but after 10 minutes seeing that it continued, I unplugged and then plugged my box back in.

So if I understood correctly, an internal call is a call that comes from the inside (from us), meaning that we are the ones making the call, and an external call is a call that comes from the outside, so it's someone who is making the effort to call us.
