Hello!

I have a problem that I can't solve.

As soon as I plug in a USB stick or my camera, it no longer shows up in My Computer, but in "Portable Devices and Media." Do you know of a way to stop this automatic recognition?

I plugged the USB stick and the camera into another computer and they both appear in My Computer.

(I'm using XP Home with SP2)

Thanks!

I found the solution.

I went to check the contents of the USB drive and the camera while they were in "Multimedia Mobile Devices". I noticed that they each had a sync file called WMPinfo.xml. So I deleted them along with the Recycled folder that was on the USB drive and the camera.

*If you have the same problem, but your USB drive for example does not appear in the Control Panel, open "Disk Management" and click on the disk that represents your USB drive. There, enable the display of hidden folders and files and uncheck the box that says "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)". If you have a sync file on your USB drive, it should now appear. Once the file is deleted, remember to hide the hidden folders and files again.

Then,
1. I right-clicked on Computer and clicked on Manage.
2. I selected Services and Applications and clicked on Services.
3. In the list of services, I searched for "Removable Storage"*.
4. I right-clicked on "Removable Storage" and clicked on Properties.
5. I noticed that the Startup Type was Manual, so I changed it to Automatic.
6. I applied the change and restarted my computer.

The USB drive and the camera now appear in Computer.
