Good evening,
First of all, I would like to inform you that I am not very skilled in computer science. So here it is, I have had a Dell laptop running Windows 7 for some time now, which I only use very rarely or to store photos and music. Now when I try to turn it on, it advises me to perform a hard drive check, which I have undertaken to do. However, when I click on one of my disks, possibly an external one named "Microsoft Office Start Button 2010 (protected) (Q:)," is it therefore protected? And when I try to check the disk, a message says, "The disk check could not be performed because Windows does not have access to the disk," but I can see this disk!! Please, what should I do? Is my hard drive dead? I am desperate.

Good evening,
It's normal, Windows is trying to restart from the system files that are accessible through the hard drive (C:) or a removable media (like your external hard drive, USB key, CD, etc...). Your PC is just asking you to indicate on which disk the Windows files are installed, that is to say the disk (C:)
