External hard drive recognized but access denied. Solved

Question

Hello everyone

After a sleepless night searching for a solution, I'm reaching out to the dear community that always gets me out of sticky situations.

Following a reinstallation of my XP SP2 Media Center, my external hard drive on which I had stored all the data to keep is no longer accessible.

Let me explain: it is perfectly detected as usual, shows up in My Computer, but when I double-click on it, I get "I:/ is not accessible - access denied."
In "disk management," it appears with the correct size of 160GB, but from My Computer and "properties," all capacities are showing as zero.
The problem is that I don't want to format it because the data on it is very important!!!
I tried installing the driver and nothing changed, and it works perfectly on another PC.

Please, where is the issue coming from and what should I do????

Hello everyone!

The simplest method that worked is as follows:

You need to have administrative rights, click on the properties of the concerned disk.
Click on the Security tab.
Click on Edit and a window named Permissions for 'the disk blablabla' will open.
Then click on Add, enter your Windows username in "Enter the names of the objects to select" and then click on "Check Names" and finally on OK.
Click on Allow next to Full Control, confirm with OK and you're done.

Hello, when you start up your PC, you always see a screen with the motherboard brand, which offers you a key to enter the setup (F something). You press it, and you then enter the BIOS. You go to the boot settings, set the boot priority to the CD drive, and that's it!

To unlock your disk, you need to do as Sammy said, but for it to work, when you reach "enter the names of the objects to select", type user; at that moment it creates a user that didn't exist, and then you do what Sammy said and it works, because before I only had system and administrative rights and no matter how I tried the procedure, nothing worked.

To resolve this issue, you need to disable simple file sharing and take ownership of the folder:

Disable simple file sharing:
Click Start, then Computer.
In the Tools menu, click Folder Options, then click the View tab.
Under Advanced settings, uncheck the box for Use simple file sharing (recommended), then click OK.
Right-click on the folder you want to take ownership of, then click Properties.
Click the Security tab, then click OK on the Security message, if it appears.
Click Advanced settings, then click the Owner tab.
In the Name list, click your username, Administrator if you are logged in as an administrator, or the Administrators group.

If you want to take ownership of the content in this folder, check the box for Replace owner on subcontainers and objects.
Click OK.

The following error message may appear, where Folder is the name of the folder you want to take ownership of:
You do not have permission to read the contents of the directory Folder. Do you want to replace the permissions of the directory with permissions granting you full control? All permissions will be replaced if you press Yes.
Click Yes.
Click OK, then reapply the desired permissions and security settings for the folder and its contents.

Hi everyone,
I'm in the same mess as Rammsteinjuju, but apparently it’s partially solved thanks to Sammy’s posts (access rights issues) and Meticuleuxx.
I typed "user" in the "enter the names of objects to select" field
then I clicked on "authenticated users" in the existing options, then I confirmed: MIRACLE!!!
Let’s see if this solution will last or not ;-)
