Spooler is not working

Hello everyone,

I had a spooler problem under XP, like many others. Not only did no printer appear in the printer management window, but any attempt to install a new printer ended in failure.

While searching online, I found the following "trick" that allows you to temporarily activate the print spooler:
go to Start>Run and type the following command in the window:
net start spooler
then click OK. I repeat, this temporarily starts the printer (for the session).

In my case, the print spooler was set to manual, while it is normally set to automatic by default.
To check that it activates automatically with each session, you need to look in the Windows services management section.
To do this, go to Start>Run and type the following command in the window:
services.msc
then click OK: in the list that appears, find Print Spooler. In the "Startup Type" column, next to "Print Spooler," it should say "Automatic." If it doesn't (you might see "Disabled" or "Manual" instead), then you likely have found the reason for your failure.
Double-click on the "Print Spooler" line. A window appears: in the "General" tab, for "Startup Type," select the "Automatic" option. Click OK and close your "Services" window.

Your spooler is now ready to launch automatically. After such an operation, I personally prefer to restart the computer.

Hi, I had the same problem and I tried this solution and it works
download TuneUp and start the PC in safe mode
go to c:\windows\system32\spool\PRINTERS
delete the contents of the PRINTERS folder
the same for: c:\windows\system32\spool\drivers
go to the TuneUp maintenance software and execute the "TuneUp Maintenance in 1 click" task, the most relevant task is repairing the registry.
once finished, restart the system and go to the "Printers and Faxes" explorer and delete all installed printers and then restart the system.
reinstall the printers and try to print again; it should work.

Have you attempted a system restore?

To perform a system restore, you do:

Start >> All Programs >> Accessories >> System Tools >> System Restore.

Choose to restore to a date prior to your issue.

It sounds like a reinstall is in order for your issue.

Your CD is probably not being recognized because you changed service packs in the meantime. Your CD is likely on SP1 while you must now be on SP2.

It's because his file was no longer present in system32 that I advised him to run sfc /scannow. But it doesn't work because in the meantime he must have changed the service pack.

Hence my final advice after trying the restore: reinstalling. Or repairing.

For the reinstallation, I am directly restarting the installation through my Windows XP CD.

The zero risk doesn't exist! I advise you to back up important files (documents, account settings, emails, music, videos, etc.) before attempting a repair or a reinstallation!

So, for everyone who buys a PC, and especially for those who buy in large stores, two things to do:

-Create your recovery DVDs using the utility available on all major consumer brands (ACER, Compaq, HP...) immediately after the first startup,

-Make regular backups of your sensitive data

Optional advice:

When the disk doesn't have 2 partitions, create them with software like Partition Magic, and do this as soon as you have created your recovery DVDs.

With this, you're prepared for any system crash.

Problem solved: I reinstalled Service Pack 2 and everything works fine. Here’s perhaps a tip to consider in these cases!

Thanks for this post!! I had that famous error message since last night and the printer was not detected!!
I did your workaround that I found this morning... Restarting the spooler that was down!!! And reinstalling the printer!
