Slow data transfer/external hard drive

Question

Hello, I just bought a 320G Packard Bell Store and Save USB2 external hard drive, but the data transfer time is huge and I lost the receipt. Is there anyone who knows what the problem is and how to solve it? Thank you in advance. Tiffanie.

I just had the same problem a moment ago!
You need to enable the hard drive cache!!
Go to "Control Panel"
"View Devices," find your drive, then right-click "Properties," tab "Hardware"
then "Properties," then "Change Settings," then tab "Policy" and enable the cache by selecting "Better performance!!!
And there you go!!!

Hello, I was also in your situation. After multiple searches on the forums, I found nothing to solve my problem.
I just solved it and I'm sharing it with you:
Under XP, everything went well, but since I installed Vista, my 500 GB Philips external hard drive has become extremely slow, taking an entire night to move a DIVX from the external hard drive to the main disk, and it was impossible to view a DIVX directly on the external hard drive.
I had a USB hub connected to a USB port on my PC; I unplugged it and plugged my external hard drive in its place, and since then, I've regained phenomenal speed, and everything has returned to normal.
Apparently, the drivers for the hub were not good for Vista or there was a conflict; I didn't have time to check. For now, I'm not reconnecting the hub because everything works well like this.

I advise you to unplug all your USB devices and reconnect them one by one until you find the one that's causing the external hard drive to malfunction. Thank you and keep going.

I tried a lot of free software to recover my lost files... those that seem to work pose the same problem, I can't open the recovered files....
I work on Photoshop, and during a folder transfer, many .psd and .jpg files disappeared, I never managed to recover them.......!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Then, I bought an external WD hard drive to lighten my computer and to avoid losing my work. But!!!!!!!! I dropped my hard drive, the read head, etc. is broken, I've lost all my work again, and no software can recover anything! Or I have to pay €2000 for a repair in a clean room....?

I'm responding to this comment because I find it TOTALLY ridiculous and it annoys me!!!!

A 7200 RPM hard drive is a fast drive!
And that is still true today... So, if your hard drive is slow, there is a real problem somewhere between your drive and your PC (the cable or the USB port?)
