Hello. I purchased a SONY RDR HX710 DVD recorder with a hard drive quite a while ago. I am delighted with this device, apart from the following problem: very regularly, when inserting a blank DVD, the formatting phase ends with a DISC ERROR message or the DISK IS DIRTY. The disk is then no longer usable. I currently have about 200 of these DVDs that have been rejected. I should mention that the DVDs used come from various sources, both purchased online at very low prices and from major brands (SONY, FUJI, etc.). Recently, while walking through a large electronics store, I overheard a salesperson advising potential customers not to buy a SONY, claiming there are similar burning issues as those mentioned above. So I feel I am not alone in having these problems. Sony says they are not aware and offers to take the device in (which is no longer under warranty). I recently noticed that this problem does not occur with the first DVD inserted when the device is cold. I turn off the recorder every night, leaving only the date and time display, and I manage to format and burn 1 DVD per day. Is anyone aware of or has anyone encountered this issue with this type of device?
Thank you for your help.

I also have the same problem with my Sony RDR-GX3, it's old, no hard drive, no HDMI, but the same errors! "Dirty disc," "unable to read the disc" for blank DVDs! It won't even let me format them... I can't choose the burning speed, I don't know what to do! If anyone can help me... thank you!

Same problem with the Sony HX 925: it freezes during DVD transfer: HDD error, the only way to unlock it is to press the blue HDD button for 10 seconds, but you lose all the data on the hard drive. This is the third time it's happened and it's really a shame because the device was great otherwise; now I have to buy another one... This is indeed a manufacturing defect that the manufacturer should compensate for, which would be easily done if it were the automotive industry...

Bonsoir, is it possible to change the hard drive of the rdr hx 925? How? Mine is malfunctioning and is no longer under warranty. Thank you.
RESOLUTION "DIRTY DISK" ON RDR-HX710
Hello,
For some time now, I've been experiencing the same issue with my Sony DRD-HX710. By analyzing the problem, I noticed that I was getting the message "dirty disk" along with the sensation of a disk not spinning properly (an auditory illusion of a warped disk, meaning very noisy).
I concluded that the "dirty disk" issue was related to a drive problem.
Here's what I did:
- I opened the RDR-HX710 and removed the DRW-V35P burner.
- I opened the burner, vacuumed the particles inside while keeping the vacuum at a distance so as not to damage the lens.
- I cleaned the lens with rubbing alcohol using a cotton swab.
Then, I tackled the part I consider to be the cause, the rubber seal on the DVD receptacle:
1) I cleaned it with rubbing alcohol.
2) I further cleaned it with acetone to enhance its adhesive properties.
3) Using a new utility knife blade, I made a circular groove around this seal.
4) I also made 6 equidistant incisions opposite small openings on the plastic hub.
5) Afterwards, I conditioned this seal by massaging it with leather grease (Fouganza bought for 5 euros at Decathlon).
6) I removed the excess grease, re-vacuumed, and closed the cover (the semi-circular one above the DVD receptacle).
7) Next, I greased the outer part of the black upper cover that holds the DVD during operation.
8) I removed the excess grease.
9) I closed the burner and reinstalled it in the RDR-HX710.
I closed the device, reconnected it, and the problem has completely disappeared since, especially the noise issue.
Knowing the device, it takes about half an hour of work.

Hello,
Hello Holly, you seem to know a lot about engravers.
For my Panasonic DMR-EX77, the more time goes by, the more it makes a very strange noise during the finalization mode.
The problem is that when I want to change the block, I am being quoted 400 to 500€ for this part, which is more expensive than the device I bought. Unfortunately, I can't attach any photos.
I would like to know what could cause this noise that appears and evolves over time, and sometimes leads to finalization issues (another friend of mine has the same problem over time) damaged disk?? or dirty??
Could it be wear on the small drive motor? a lack of lubrication? can it be resolved easily?
Thanks

Hello Le Houx 62,
I followed your advice, but I couldn't open the engraving block. I removed all the screws. Do I need to take off all the adhesives?
I reassembled and reconnected everything in order. As a result, when I turn on the engraver, it displays "welcome" and immediately goes into "power off" while it should show "recovery." Moreover, the drawer is not working anymore. I also cannot access the hard drive. Did I make a mistake?
How can I get everything back to working order?
Thank you for your help.

I've had a recorder of the same model for 18 months. It's the same, it doesn't want to record on DVD anymore. It indicates formatting error or impossible copy. I had already seen that Carrefour was selling CD/DVD cleaning discs. After reading the messages about this same problem, I decided to buy one of those discs. Its price was €18. Despite Sony not recommending it, I used it. It only lasts 2 minutes. Extraordinary, my burner is back to like new. For everything else, it's working very well.
Go back through the archives, I've already explained how I repaired mine for next to nothing.
It's the DVD that skips on the rubber receptacle that's degrading, hence the dirty disk message since it can't read it. At SONY, they don't bother; as soon as reading is impossible, they don't consider themselves responsible. It's the disks. Wrong! It's definitely the player that's at fault. The DVDs are perfectly readable on any other device.

Hello,
I had the same problem with this Sony 710 recorder, which remains excellent in terms of recording quality and its menus.
I encountered the same "dirty disc," "C 1300," "Unable to record," etc. issues with NEW brand DVDs! Philips, Sony, Verbatim, TDK, Memorex...
The most annoying part is that it doesn't happen all the time.
I buy DVDs online, but they are brand names and come in boxes. Out of a box of 25, the first three are fine, and suddenly, on the fourth, it starts to stutter, the recording struggles to be done, and then the message: "dirty disc."
I initially blamed the DVDs. At the store, I was told that, "given the price," there could be 20% defects: 20% means 1 in 5, so 5 out of 25. Yet sometimes, often, more than 15 out of 25 are unrecordable!
I recently called SONY once again (they are friendly and competent on the phone). The technician told me that this level of failure was not normal and advised me to bring the device to the workshop. Since the warranty runs until May 21, 2007, that's what I will do. According to him, it is either a mechanical issue or a "firmware" problem. In any case, this "dirty disc" issue comes up often on forums with this excellent device, and I don't want to change it (especially since I paid 700 euros for it two years ago!).
Before handing it over to the workshop, SONY recommends backing up (onto DVD...) all your recordings because it's possible that the repair might require reformatting the hard drive.
PS: This problem indeed occurs in quick copy mode. In real-time copy mode, the recording goes smoothly.

Hello, I bought this device about 2 years ago. I'm very happy with it. I had the same problem described above with DVD-Rs. Out of 5 DVD-Rs, only one worked. I don't have the problem with DVD-RWs, why? I have no idea. Apparently, this issue is not uncommon according to what I see on the web. The problem only occurs when copying from hard drive to DVD-R. Formatting is always fine. Direct copying from TV to DVD-R is okay.
Apparently, it's an issue with this device.
I also have the same problem
Erratic dirty disc on R discs (but not on RW).
Surprising that Sony is not aware of it!
I am interested to know if anyone has been able to permanently resolve the issue.

Hello everyone,
I am also experiencing a burning issue with the RDR HX-825.
In fact, the quick copy mode (RAP) doesn't work and consistently triggers a C 13:00 error (dirty disc). The discs used are indeed Sony DVD +RW. The same burn works in Original mode as long as the DVDs are new. Once these DVDs have been burned once, it becomes impossible to re-burn them with the recorder even after formatting (same C 13:00 error).
My question is actually the following: for those who have purchased this DVD player/recorder, have you ever encountered the same problem (in other words, have you ever managed to make copies in the so-called quick mode or re-burn DVD +RW)? Could the problem be hardware-related? What brands of media do you use?
Thank you for your responses.

I have this problem with a RDR HX-750:
a rewritable disc that already had something on it cannot be burned: direct error.
I tried formatting it first on PC (slow and fast), but nothing works...

Hello everyone, I have an RDR-HX 900 that keeps telling me that the "disc is dirty" or "disc unreadable" no matter what new disc I insert.
I tried to check if it was the burner on startup = same thing = it doesn't work: the player refuses to accept any DVDs I put in.
If anyone has an idea, I'm all ears.
Eric

I found the solution for those who can't burn a used DVD+RW.
YOU MUST NOT FORMAT IT ON A PC BUT DIRECTLY WITH THE SONY BURNER.
Put your DVD into the burner, press the "DVD" button, then look in the menus to format the DVD+RW.
It takes 1 minute and then you can burn your DVD normally ;)
I did this on a SONY RDR-HXD890 and it solved my problem, but it should be the same for others.

I received this C:13:00 dirty disc message on a RDR-HX900.
For some it worked, for others it didn't.
I sent the DVD recorder to Sony's service and they said to burn at low speed to fix the issue. (Not a great solution.)
I decided to troubleshoot it myself with the service manual and found that the problem came from a C601 capacitor of 470uF 16Volts that was dry due to being positioned near a power diode that gets very hot.
This capacitor is located on the power board on the -8 volts line.
After replacing it, it works like new without the C:13.00 error.
Hopefully this can help several users.

Hello Daniel, thank you for your message. The problem that seemed to have disappeared has resurfaced to the point where I can no longer do a single engraving. I have therefore decided to replace this capacitor. After removing the board, I see that the capacitor labeled C601 has a value of 220µF - 25V and not 470µF - 16V as stated in your message of June 13th. (This is an RDR-HX710 and not a 900, but I assume that the power board is the same.) Can you confirm that this is indeed the correct component? I took some pictures of this area of the printed circuit but I don't know how to insert them into this post...
Thank you for your response and have a good day.

Have you tried using compressed air to dust off the ventilation opening at the back of your device? An excessive temperature may be the cause of your issue...

Thank you very much to those who give tips. I thought I had lost all the content of the hard drive. I blew on the ventilation port and then after disconnecting the device, I gently shook it and a lot of dust fell out, I vacuumed with the minimum power of the vacuum. When I plugged it back in, it worked normally and I had regained all the functions.
Hi, I have the same problem, even with Sony DVDs I almost always get the same message in English "the disc is dirty". Since my device is still under warranty, I have taken it for repairs three times in a row, but at Sony they either don't want to or can't solve this issue, which is sad for a so-called big brand.
Hello,
Since then, I have more or less resolved the issue. In fact, they have made a compromise between the noise of the fan and its efficiency. When the device is hot, it refuses to recognize or reports a dirty disc.
You just have to turn the device off completely and wait for it to cool down sufficiently. Ever since I discovered this, I turn it off completely at night (only the date and time are displayed) and in the morning, I insert a new DVD as soon as it powers on and the formatting starts.
I have been doing this for over 2 months and it has always worked.
I have thus managed to recover 130 GB out of the 160 on the hard drive.
Let me know if it works for you too.
Best regards,
Marc

hello,
anyway, I noticed that even if the hard drive recording to DVD doesn't work, and the DVD is marked as dirty, there is a way to reuse these same DVDs for live recordings. at least, there's no need to throw them away.

I solved this problem by avoiding the quick copy from HDD to DVD. I tried 7 DVDs and not once did I encounter a dirty disk error. It takes longer, but it works. Change the setting in the menu to make a normal copy, not a high-speed copy. I can use the DVD-Rs that were previously marked as dirty.
I have a Sony RDR-HX900 recorder/player
and the same problem: "dirty disk" display every time it starts in rapid copy mode! I confirm that long copy mode, manually selected, works perfectly and that there is no need to wait for the device to cool down (I used DVD-Rs). Thanks for the valuable advice.

Hello everyone,
I have this wonderful recorder RDR-HX710 just like all of you, but for the past 2 days, it's been showing "HDD ERROR". I have 50G free space left on it, and if I format it I will lose everything. Does anyone have a solution??
Thank you in advance.

Hello, same overheating problem on the HX910. I'm using Sony DVD-Rs, I can burn an average of 7 or 8 in a row before the machine crashes (Dirty Disc, C13.00), completely shuts down (after a fixed "welcome") then "recovery" and finally returns to normal after 30 seconds. This is typically an overheating issue due to the fast HDD > DVD copy.
At Sony, they must have underestimated the temperature and the fan is insufficient (yet already quite noisy in my opinion, especially during the copying!! It works hard) /
Now for those who are no longer under warranty and/or who are handy, leave the top cover open and/or change the fan ;-)
Be careful with built-in devices in living room furniture then. It needs air, this little one.
Thanks Sony

Good evening ledav02, personally I have never had the problem during burning, but rather when formatting a new disc. However, the problem seems to have disappeared as it came... I have no further issues with this device. I did have to further reduce its environment following the purchase of a 40" LCD (Sony of course), all of which is in an old piece of furniture. For now, everything is fine. I should, however, think about either replacing the 710 or adding a more recent HDD burner with HDMI output, or even a PS3 60 mb, while waiting for HDD + Blu-ray burners.
