Windows host process Rundll32 has stopped... Solved

Question

I just bought a new PC with the latest Windows Vista, and I used an external hard drive to recover my old files from XP Home Edition. The problem is that when I try to open my movies that are on the external drive, a window opens with the following message: Windows Host Process (Rundll32) has stopped working. Even when I copied the same movies to my new PC, I still get the same error message and I can't view my movies.

Good evening

The problem is actually very simple to solve. Go to the control panel, then folder options, then view, and finally check the box "always show icons, never thumbnails". It's the movie thumbnails...... that VISTA can't handle.

It is probably a management issue with Nero7.Premium.Reloaded.v.7.5.   The latest update: Nero-7.7.5.1_fra_update definitely resolves the issue.

Same problem, I get this message every time I open a folder that contains an MPEG, and as many times as there are MPEGs in the folder, it's annoying.
I don't have Nero on my PC, the PC is new and came with Vista, so it's something else.

Look, do your videos work well under XP? NO?

Then why would they stop working?

It's a block from Vista, apparently, even music from the internet, DRM or not, can't be played from Vista.

I read this in an article, it's not me who tested it.

So for videos, this was implemented in Vista to fight against piracy.

But otherwise, we will still test a couple of things.

First, try compressing a movie (from another Vista OS) into zip, rar, or another format, but compressed, and try to play your video from the compressed folder. Does your video start? And does it play without showing you an error message?

If not, here's the second “thing” to test.

- You have your video on your Vista, okay,

- download "filemon,"

- then start "filemon,"

- after, start your video.

- okay the messages appear........

- quickly go to "filemon," stop the analysis, and see what really happened when you opened your video

Actually, it seems to be a problem related to inserting the first image of the video for the icon.
If you change the display mode in Windows Explorer to list view instead of medium icons, and also remove the details bar at the bottom of the explorer, this problem goes away.
Windows is no longer using the right software to read the video in order to display this image in the icon.

Yes, I think you must be right, Fab, because the popup appears  when we open the file where the mpeg2 files are located, and once Vista has, so to speak, detected all the mpeg2 files present, the popup no longer opens...  When opening the file containing the mpeg2, there are as many popups as there are files...  :)   We're onto something good!

You should check the default program assigned to open the mpeg file and leave only Windows Media Player and nothing else. As I'm not in front of the PC, I'm giving the steps to verify: go to Control Panel > Programs > Default Programs > Make a file type always open in a specific program. A+

Well, I don't really know where it might come from, but I can tell you that it corresponds to the moment I installed Nero as well as the latest updates of Vista.
The first thing to do is to make sure to update your drivers by going to the manufacturers' websites for your PC components.
Then there's this solution I found on another forum:

*Right-click on Computer (Start Menu) => Properties
*Click on Advanced System Settings on the left in the active window
*Performance tab => Settings
*Data Execution Prevention tab
*Check the second option
*Click on Add
*Select: C:Windows/System32/run32dll.exe
For those who have the "COM Surrogate" problem, additionally add the dllhost.exe file which is also located in the System32 folder.

Now, to say that Vista fights against amateur pirates, I think that's a bit paranoid; Windows is looking out for itself and fighting against the hacking of its OS, but for the rest, why fight against its livelihood??

There it is, hoping that the big boss will make useful updates very soon because fixing its OS is fun for 5 minutes ;)

Hello,

I found several solutions to these numerous problems:
- com surrogate is no longer responding
- rundll32 has stopped working
- Windows explorer has stopped working

For me, it was the fact that as soon as I opened a folder containing an mpeg2 video, the explorer and rundll32 crashed.

Hello, I also have this error message "Windows host process (Rundll32) has stopped working" on a PC with Vista, and yet I installed NERO 8 (I have never installed an earlier version), which shows that this version does not fix this bug. To be precise, I also use an external hard drive, and the error message appears when Windows tries to display the thumbnail of videos in folders.  I haven't tried the solutions previously suggested yet because the problem is on a colleague's PC, but I have high hopes!

Hi everyone, I had the same problem except the message was showing up every 10 seconds! But I finally managed to find my issue, I just had to install a new version of Nero. Personally, I just downloaded Nero 8.10, then installed it and it also uninstalls the old Nero that you had. Then you restart and it’s all good :p  Good luck to you all!

Thank you for your responses I still have the problem despite a visit to the repair shop. From the explanation I received, it's an instability due to Vista. When a single element is deemed "unstable" by Vista, it abandons everything related to that element, like a contamination. Currently, it's having downloaded some PSP masks from the internet. It didn't like that and now it abandons my documents folder as soon as I open it. I believe the solution for me is to quickly replace Vista with the third version of Windows XP. I have the same problem with certain videos. In my case, they are recorded flash videos (streaming) in MP4 format. Since my media players were reading them as MP3, I changed the extension to MPEG. I could play them, but I also saw this error message. My solution: Rename them to AVI and the codec seems to behave well. So make sure that the extension really corresponds to the format; if not, change it one by one. The installation of the other codec failed for me.

I would like to add this  I have to admit that this problem often occurs when we have backup systems which not only slow down the system terribly but often start before Windows, which sees this as a threat.  For example: Acer Empowering Technology was the cause of this message. To eliminate the problem, do the following:   Right-click on the computer icon then click on Advanced system settings  Then click on settings under performance Then Data Execution Prevention Check "Turn on DEP for all programs... except those I select", click on add and browse to the desired program. For this example (and this applies to other programs) I excluded Acer Empowering Technology Framework Launcher from the prevention imposed by Vista and I have no more issues -- Do not fear change but fear routine.

Xtremis's solution solved my problem. You have to prevent Vista from displaying thumbnails through the control panel. At first, I went at it the hard way, using all your methods: complete uninstallation of Nero (I'll do it differently for burning...), installation of an Mpeg2 codec, preventing Vista from sending me the message "The bazar process has closed to annoy you."  The only problem is that you can't choose to display thumbnails without an icon for ONE folder. I used to like seeing my "My Pictures" folder as icons... But at least the computer doesn't bother me anymore.  Thanks Xtremis, I'll give you a little "+" for your solution.

I had this problem when opening Vista that was due to the uninstallation of the NVIDIA driver for a change to an ATI card the remaining file is called NVAPI.DLL. I just renamed it to old and after restarting, no more message. I even think that I should be able to delete it.
