Go to Start
Run
Type: regedit and OK

Follow this tree:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\system\CurrentControlSet\Control\Windows

In the right pane
Double-click on --> CSDVersion
Change the value 300 to 200
Restart the PC.

Install --> kb888111.exe
Restart the PC
Install the audio driver.

It wasn't exactly written like that in the BIOS, but there was something like "Integrated audio device" that was set to "AUTO," so I switched it to "Enabled."

And then I heard the little Windows startup music play, followed by the little "Realtek" icon appearing in the taskbar; I almost thought I was going to cry!

First of all, thank you for your response, even though it didn't help me, I've tried everything: updating the driver, system restoration, etc...
Except for the BIOS, but I don't know much about that and it seems risky to me.

For your information, I installed DriverBoost which recognizes Realtek but labels it as a "disconnected device." And I'm not sure what to think about that.

Hum... I already checked in the Device Manager: no question or exclamation marks.

Otherwise, my PC is an HP, the precise model... I'm not too sure. It's a tower, I'm running on XP SP3, my sound card is integrated into the graphics card (if I'm not mistaken) which is an ATI Radeon HD 4600 series. Well, that's everything, if you need more info just let me know.

Restart the PC and try reinstalling the audio driver.
