It is important to respect not only the voltage and polarities of a charger but also its rated current. For example, an original charger designed to deliver a current of 3 amps at 12 volts should not be replaced by a charger providing a maximum of 2.5 amps at 12 volts.
This undercapacity is one of the most frequent causes of overheating.
Next comes the reality of the charger's capabilities compared to what is indicated on its casing. Often, "generic" chargers from unknown brands do not comply with what is stated on the casing. They are often undersized. Out of caution, it is always better to buy an oversized charger rather than the opposite.
Finally, some quality chargers incorporate electronics that manage the charge at a specific current based on the battery's charge level and the internal temperature of the charger, and most often, "cheap" unbranded chargers do not include this charge management.
To say that there is no danger would be unwise. In the past, chargers for MacBook were blamed for catching fire, but it later turned out that these chargers were "counterfeit," illegal copies that did not incorporate electronic charge management.
Therefore, monitor closely.

The original Asus charger for my daughter's laptop overheats as soon as it's plugged in. For example, today at barely 35% charge, the charger is very hot, sometimes almost untouchable, it feels like it's burning! Everything is original though!
