Hello, you must have had quite a scare! It's true that if lightning strikes the house or just next to it, surge protectors won't do anything, nor will anything else, because lightning creates bridges and can spread between two conductors spaced 20/40 cm apart without any problem.
That's why it's also important to have an electrical circuit, a telephone circuit, and a TV antenna that do not share the same conduit and always unplug everything; it can help minimize damage.
