Hello,
I have been working on a quite large Word file for a while. At one point, I saved the file without any issues. But now I can't open it because:
"Cannot open this file because its size exceeds 512 megabytes."
The file is, of course, full of images. That's all it contains, in fact.
Open Office won’t open it, or when it does, it only opens 30 pages out of 200.
I tried opening the file with Word 2007 and Word 2010 on different PCs. Always the same message.
I managed to open it with Wordpad, and I was able to copy almost the entire document to get down to a 480MB file. But the quality of the images has decreased significantly. I need the maximum quality.
So I'm looking for a solution. Thank you in advance.

even if you need images, you must understand that your Word document will be projected on a screen like a slideshow or a movie, so the image quality does not need to be at maximum. A size of 100 KB per image is the maximum in Word

I understand that I made a mistake, and I won't do it again. I simply didn't imagine that such a problem could arise without any warning.
Otherwise, yes, it's a comic book (some images copy-pasted). Originally, it was supposed to be about fifty pages, but it kept going, and I kept working on it. If I have no way to recover the work I've spent so many hours on, and if I'm still motivated, I will work on Publisher and do it in small files.
I know what to do now to prevent this problem. Right now, I'm just looking to recover my work.-
Hello, same problem for me, on a Word document (the result of my work for several months and far from being finished) that I couldn't open earlier, I first copied it to an external hard drive (just in case), I compressed it to docx, but nothing worked, and now I've just managed to open it by recovering it from a restore point, I've only lost a few pages... I think I'll finish working on it without closing it... I'll play with my sleep mode... what do you think? Do you have another solution suitable for a "not super tech-savvy" person?

I didn't mean to scold you, did I? :-)
Are the comic strips scans of drawings you've made, or drawings made directly in Word? Do you have the sources somewhere?
The file format is *.doc or *.docx. If it's the latter (Word 2007 or 2010 format), try opening it with Winzip or Power Archiver to recover the images.
Denis Bajram created the last volume of UW1 entirely on Illustrator; in my opinion, this program would suit you better.

The images are images taken from the internet; they are webcomics. Therefore, the layout was often difficult, and quality is necessary for the text to remain readable. I have kept the images. In fact, I used Photoshop and Paint to modify the images, then I looked for the best way to layout everything, ultimately doing a copy-paste of what I wanted.
So the images from which I derived the images in the Word file, I have them. The images in the file only exist in the file itself.
But if Winzip or Power Archiver allows me to recover the images as they are displayed in my Word (thus with a perfect size and cropping for the layout), that would work perfectly for me. However, maintaining quality is essential.-
It depends on the format you are using:
the *.docx format is actually a *.zip file in which you can find the XML structure of the Word document and the different media contained in the document.
So, if you have a file with the *.docx or *.docm extension, you can perform the following action: right-click on it and "open with". You choose Winzip or Powerarchiver depending on which one is installed on your computer, and you open the archive. Then, you dig around to find the images. -

Ok, so I found out how to do it. Actually, you first need to open WinZip and then click "Open" (by right-clicking on the file, it adds, even if you do "Open with"). This way, you can explore the Word file. Inside, I found the images, and I deleted 2 of them, which allowed me to reduce the file size. So now it weighs 500MB and I can open it.
I feel like some images have lower quality, but most of them have retained good quality. (Why? No idea). But anyway, it works now.

(And to tell the truth, in the recovered images, they are whole, and only the cropping has not been kept.) -

Of course. It's crazy to do that.
WORD = word processing = to create TEXT
What's the point of putting images in WORD? There are plenty of good programs for that.
What's in the file? A comic? A scan of another book?
