How to remove gray highlight (Word 07)

Hello,
I have a problem with Word 2007, and none of the methods I found solve it!
I just wrote a letter, and there is a slight gray highlight behind the text that is barely visible on the screen, but shows up a bit more when printed.
The method "Office icon > Word Options > Advanced Options > Show document content > fields with shading = never" doesn't work.
The method "Office icon > Word Options > Display > uncheck show highlighting marks" doesn't work either.
To remove them, I have to use "clear formatting", which is quite bothersome when the document is long.
Do you have a solution?
