I5 480M processor and RAM

Solved

Hello,

I just bought a portable PC (MSI GX740 E7405) with an i5 480M processor. On the product page it said it was a dual-core, but when I type "dxdiag" in the Start menu search, it shows a quad-core. Which one is correct?

Bonus question: How can I know the amount of RAM my PC can support and the RAM capacity supported by each slot?

Thanks in advance!

Attention, there are several models with the same reference, but differing by the CPU. For example with a core i5 480M, like yours:

      https://www.materiel.net/pc-portable/l409/

or a core i7, like this one:

      https://www.materiel.net/pc-portable/l409/

In both cases, there is 2GB of memory installed and 4GB possible.

There are also ones with a core i5 460M.

Okay, so I can go up to 8GB?

What is indicated here is a maximum of 4GB. Therefore there is no guarantee that 8GB would be handled.

With 8GB, the computer responds much faster, some games (like Metro 2033) run much better and loading times, which can sometimes be a bit long, become much faster.
When I buy a game, it's to play it, not spend my life waiting for it to load.

your proc is indeed a dual core, but with Intel hyperthreading technology, you have 2 virtual cores on top, i.e. 4 cores in total

then for your RAM, in my opinion it's 2GB per channel, because it's not written anywhere "extensible to 8 GB"

Okay, thanks a lot. And do you know what trick to do to activate those two virtual cores?

"and then for your RAM, in my opinion it's 2GB per channel, because nothing says 'extensible to 8 GB'.".

It's a laptop. In general, laptops have only 2 memory slots. It can't have 8GB of memory unless the motherboard supports 4GB sticks.

@ epango: thank you I can read, but I meant
since it’s not written extensible, that means the CM shouldn’t manage 4GB

@ skyland: you don’t have any操作 to do, usually HT is enabled by default, if you see 4 cores in the task manager, that’s good =)

I just checked and I have 4 cores activated. Thank you, and regarding the RAM, I’ll look into it.

For RAM, indeed you cannot exceed 4GB (2x2GB):

It doesn’t say that it’s a maximum of 4GB. They just say the PC has 4GB (2x2GB).

yes it's not stated, but in general when you can put more you can specify, so in my opinion it's 4GB max

Ok ok thanks. I’ll still ask MSI and if not it’s not a big deal.
