I have some scoop on the DCP 585 cw!!

After 45 minutes on the phone with a Brother technician last January, he told me that my print head was defective and that it would cost me €135 + €15 for shipping!!

So far, nothing new compared to all of you.
But the funniest part comes next: I explained to him that paying for a repair that costs more than the machine itself for a known defect is inconceivable!! He replied that I could save this price by setting my printer to print on inkjet or photo paper and that everything would come out perfectly!! I tried it with him online and indeed it worked wonderfully. The only problem: my ink is going down rapidly! I told him and he said I have to choose between paying for the repair or buying ink more often!

This defect definitely benefits Brother to sell their overpriced ink cartridges!! A manufacturer that prefers profits over customer satisfaction. I do not recommend Brother to anyone around me!!

Today, I have a used HP from 2009 that also had a print head problem when I got it from a private seller: I called HP, sent it in, and it was repaired and returned to me in 3 weeks despite being out of warranty, and it cost me nothing because it was a known defect of the brand!!

The comparison is not even close!!

I had the same problem, try the automatic cleaning, it consumes a lot of ink. If that still doesn't work, it's that you are among the many other users of this machine. Mine after 15 months of service (not intensive) had to go to the repair shop and the result was a print head replacement for 133 euros (bought for 119). Moral of the story, it’s going straight to the trash and I’m not willing to take this brand anymore which refuses to acknowledge a design flaw.
It would be desirable to gather all those who have had this problem to inform Brother.

I have the same problem and I went to the shop, who told me that my printer was not repairable and since it is 1.5 years old, it has not been under warranty for 6 months...
It's quite outrageous: boycott Brother! I'm ready to sign up for a collective legal action because the warranty is not limited if the usual use of an item is notably less than the intended use.

I am in the same situation as all of you. Overnight, no more black printing. So I cleaned (multiple times) the print heads... Anyway, nothing worked, so I took it to a small repair shop near my house and just by explaining my problem to him, he said: "Ouch, I bet it's a Brother!" Well done. I wasn't the first one, and he couldn't do anything... Ugh, super Brother!

Welcome to the club. Brother DCP585CW printer purchased on November 3, 2011. Problems began in mid-November 2010: black printing no longer works correctly. Automatic cleaning of the nozzles done many times and replacement of the black cartridge. Nothing works. Returned to the store's customer service in December. Of course, the warranty just expired. Printer kept until January 18, when I was informed of the repair costs: €135 (replacement of the black print head + labor). More expensive than a new printer! After visiting forums where problems with this version are rampant, I suggested to customer service and sales that there might be a hidden defect with this product. Well, they are conveniently unaware of any other affected customers. The funniest part is that they haven't had this product in stock for ages. Given all your messages, it seems that a collective legal action would indeed be the best thing to do as I believe we are facing a hidden defect issue. In this case, it’s not the contractual warranty that applies but the legal warranty. Let’s unite.

I have exactly the same problem with a Pelikan black cartridge that suddenly stopped working properly. I then replaced it with a generic cartridge, and it's even worse; there's no black ink at all, and I can't find a solution online.

Has anyone else had this issue with an original cartridge??

Is there something going on right now? Are they all failing at the same time or what?!?! What a mess!

Same for my Brother 585 CW printer, it only prints in black and blue; the other colors don't work at all! It's not normal that so many people are affected by the same problem with the same model of printer. Would a class action against them be possible in order to at least obtain a free repair for it?

Same problem, device purchased in July 2009, a return for customer service in June 2010 due to a clogged black nozzle, they returned it repaired, and the nozzle is clogged again, but the warranty has expired by 5 months... I'll check but it's frustrating if they refuse the warranty.

I too have exactly the same problem with the black ink not printing.
I bought my printer in April 2009, and I use it very occasionally. It turns on by itself for nozzle cleaning regularly.
After changing my cartridge, no black ink!!! It's a shame if this is the case for many buyers!!! I am going to write them a letter; if we all do the same, maybe it will make things change. But in the future, NO MORE BROTHER. Useless brand!!!!!!

One more on the board of the DCP 585CW BROTHER bought 15 months ago as a gift for my father-in-law! No more black printing. I also have an HP printer that I've had for three years with no problems. A piece of advice to everyone: spread the word online and stop buying this brand, which seems, based on previous remarks from others who have experienced this defect, to be taking customers for "suckers." Perhaps it would also be a good idea for everyone to get in touch with consumer associations and check with competition services and prices...........?
