My MacBook shuts down at 40% battery...

Hello everyone,
Here’s my problem as stated in the title: my Macbook shuts down when there is 40% battery left -_-” which, as you can imagine, is very (very) annoying for a student like me. I’d like to specify that my Macbook is a 13-inch model, and I’ve had it since October 2008 (to give you a clearer idea, it has exactly the same design as today’s Macbook Pros, meaning the gray unibody with black backlit keys) except that it’s a “regular” Macbook. I’ve looked into various forums and I was told it was probably a temperature issue, but I checked with software and everything is within the norm. I also tried the trick of removing the battery and pressing the power button for 10 seconds, then waiting 10 minutes to plug it back into power (yes, I’m desperate!!) but nothing works (it just crashed on me again --”)
So my question is: could it be a battery issue due to the fact that I use it every day for class, discharging it during the day and charging it to full every night? Could that be the cause of this problem?
