Connect my Freebox to a wall-mounted RJ45 port Solved

Question

Hello,

I just received my Freebox, they give us a telephone socket in T... but I have RJ45 in the walls! :( ... I looked a bit everywhere online but couldn't find anything concrete or understandable; we immediately deal with people who are knowledgeable and throw professional jargon terms at you and I don't understand anything. If someone could help me. For info, I have a box in my entrance with only a DTI test socket from FT...
How can I do it simply without having 30,000 km of wires lying around or having a simple connection! (No connecting my box to something plugged into something else and then another thing just to finally plug it into the wall!) ...

No worries, just remove the T-plug from the RJ11 cable of your Freebox and plug the RJ11 connector directly into your RJ45 socket, it's perfectly compatible!

These are the new standards in new housing, RJ45 sockets in every room to transmit your data, TV, etc. They are fully compatible with RJ11 cables (telephone and modem cables), no adapters needed, just plug it in and it works!

A wall-mounted RJ45 socket? OK, but... what is this socket connected to on the other end?

To connect the Freebox, you don't need that!

You need to connect the provided cable, which I believe is black, from the Freebox (the "ADSL" socket) to the basic wall telephone socket (in T).

And to connect the phone to the Freebox, connect the SMALL cable (white or gray, I think, with a T-shaped phone plug on one end) to the Freebox, and the phone on the other end.

I just have a T socket (DTI test) in a cabinet where I keep the apartment's fuses; otherwise, it's all RJ45... given that it's been since October 7 that I made my request to Free, I'm pretty pissed off about still waiting!

It depends if you still have a France Telecom line + Free subscription or if you only have Free (fully unbundled)

If you still have a France Telecom line: then you need an RJ11 to T-adapter

If you only have Free (fully unbundled), the ADSL filter is useless

You plug the RJ11 ADSL cable from the Freebox into your RJ45 wall socket and connect your phone to the Freebox, there should normally be a small RJ11 end on one side and a T-plug on the other side, you connect the RJ11 side into the connector labeled "telephone" at the back of your Freebox and plug any telephone handset into the T part
Or if you have a telephone handset with an RJ11/RJ11 cable, you connect it directly to the back of your box in the connector labeled "telephone"

ok the apartment is new, I'm the first one in, no FT number, I directly requested a line activation from Free so no need for the filter? I will try that... I need to buy a phone to test all this lol... I'll be back! (I'm using the freewifi to talk to you in the meantime) ^^

Therefore, if I understand correctly, I need to buy an RJ11<>RJ11 cable, because with the cable provided with the box I have

- a black one: RJ11<>T male (with female on the back) so the filter "is useless"
- a beige one (this color is too retro): RJ11<>T female

For the phone depending on its connector:
- RJ11: I connect it directly to the box
- T: I use the cable with the ugly color (RJ11<>Female)

Well, that's great, it works :) I bought an RJ11<>RJ11 cable, and the phone came with an RJ11<>RJ45, so I used the cable that came with the phone to connect it to my wall socket and the RJ11<>RJ11 for the other one :) ...

Perfect! So if I want to share in a network, do I need a patch panel? What is that?

It goes a bit beyond my skills, but basically, the patch panel will receive the ADSL signal and distribute it to the various outlets in the house. It will also, through the router, enable networking using the outlets in different rooms. But for that, at a minimum, the outlets must have been pre-wired, which in my opinion, is not the case in your house.
Enable WiFi on your box and set up a network; it's almost the same thing.

I also have RJ 45 sockets at home, and actually, the RJ 11 phone plug fits into them, so just connect the Freebox to the wall via the RJ 11 and that's it, no need for the old phone socket anymore.

Does the RJ11 <-> RJ11 cable need to be straight? Crossed?

I tried testing with an RJ11 <-> RJ45 cable (after the electrical renovation of my apartment), and I have experienced a "horrible" speed (over 40db attenuation!) whereas before, with the T-jacks, I had a more than decent speed...

I'm worried... Will my speed come back as it was before?

I don't think there is a crossover cable in RJ 11 format, what cable do you have? RJ 11<--> RJ 11 or RJ 11<-->RJ 45? I didn't know that RJ 11<-->RJ 45 existed. Connecting your box with RJ 11 eliminates a disruptive element, the T-junction, so it should improve the connection, not the opposite; it must be something else. When you had the T-junction socket on the wall, was it before the renovation of your installation? If so, you should have RJ45 (compatible with RJ 11) sockets in the rooms, and a T-junction in your electrical cabinet. Go to your electrical cabinet, open the T-junction, and check if there is a capacitor, which is a small rectangular electronic component, either white or black, with 2 or 3 legs connected to the telephone wires on the metal pins of the T-junction. If you have one, it needs to be removed, with no risk involved; it was used by F Telecom to test lines remotely. The presence of this capacitor can divide your speed by up to 2 times. Removing it should restore good speed.

No, I don't think there are capacitors in the RJ45 sockets, but check the one in your electrical cabinet.

However, I'm surprised you don't have a T socket in your electrical cabinet, that's usually the new standard. Maybe things have changed...

Is your drop in speed a result of this renovation?
Are you on total unbundling? (no FTelecom subscription), you didn't have ADSL filters before? If you're not on total unbundling, you'll still need ADSL filters on each used socket, and you'll then need an RJ11<-->T socket adapter + ADSL filter to connect your box to it....

Change the cable from your box to the wall socket, it might be defective...

You need a simple RJ11<-->RJ11 cable that you connect from the box to the XDSL socket to the RJ45 wall socket.

Confirmation a little higher from Brupala that there is indeed a capacitor in the DTI test RJ 45 socket, so check yours and disconnect it. It should come from there...

2 capacitors, I doubt it. However, I think the one on the top (black) is one; disconnect it properly by marking the wires and test it. The black one really looks like a capacitor, but I expected to find it in the DTI test box, not outside. But why not!

Hello, As I see that this is related to my problem, I would like to ask for your help. I need to move my box from the office to the living room where my connected TV is located and where we mostly use tablets to reduce Wi-Fi losses. I have therefore brought a 1-pair cable to the living room for the phone line, and an rj45 cable to maintain a physical connection between my box and my desktop computer in the office. My problem is the following: I want to keep my phone base in the office, but now I don't know where to plug it in since the box is no longer there. Do I need to run a new rj11 cable just for the base, or is there a possible workaround with my connections in the living room (rj45, 1-pair cable)? By the way, I also didn't know that an rj11 could connect to an RJ45. Hello, Thanks for your response brupala, but I haven't run any cables between the office and the living room yet, and I have 1 dual phone cable and 1 Ethernet cat6 cable ready to run. Currently, the telephone socket is functional in the office, which I will move to the living room (this socket has only one pair). Also, it seems to me that the RJ11 has 6 contacts? I have 100m of 1 pair cable for a need of 20m, can I use the remaining 80m for my RJ11, how?  Thanks ;-)
