Using your box at someone else's place

Question

Hello,

I just arrived at a friend's place who has an internet connection (Cegetel Sagem modem without Wi-Fi) and to get Wi-Fi at his place, I brought my club-internet box. Once plugged in instead of his modem, without any settings (username, password...), it works ????

I wanted to know if that's normal, and if we're connected to his line or mine, I wouldn't want him to get overcharged.....I don't know if I'm being clear....feel free to ask me questions...

We both have an ADSL plan... he started with Cegetel but was bought by SFR and I’m with Club Internet which was also bought by SFR... so ultimately the same ISP....

How can I tell if my box is acting like a simple modem?

Since then, I reconfigured my box with its ID and password, but I don't see any difference in usage... I’m not sure what to do ????

It’s VERY difficult to advise you without knowing what the two types of contracts subscribed by your friend and you are, whether it's ADSL or low bandwidth, and if it's the same ISP for both..

In the case of ADSL at your friend's place, since the line is specifically "activated" for that with a given ISP and for a given identifier, it is likely that your box is behaving as a "simple modem" and that you are consuming regular phone communication at his expense, on the "normal" line. But this is just a completely provisional answer..

The best thing would be to ask Club-Internet..

Your friend probably has an ADSL offer "unlimited internet (plus IP phone + TV?…)" with a monthly subscription. If you connect now using his login, it’s like your friend is connecting normally with his usual IP address, so "for free" under his plan. The modem used doesn’t matter, as long as it is ADSL compatible and sends an identifier that is recognized as a subscriber by the ISP.

In the previous case (your box with your login), if your ISP had been different from the ISP that set up his line, the ADSL connection would have been denied, as it wouldn’t be in the same "domain". However, it might have been able to go through as a low-speed communication if connected to the "normal" part of the line, like a simple Minitel connection, thus billed by the minute... Only the "ADSL" voice of the phone is free (in practice, two telephone devices, if the FT subscription has been maintained: one "free" device, another "paid" one…).

So, a priori, you don’t have to worry...

Thank you for your reply... I'm still wondering how the ADSL connection could be accepted when I didn't have the correct ID and password... that's why I'm worried about overcharging.

This is the whole issue with acquisitions: sometimes the acquired companies maintain their separate identities, and thus their customers, by being simply merged on a "financial" level, rather than a "technical" one.
In this case, the customer databases must have been merged into one.
I believe that detailed information should be available in the "FAQ" on the ISP's portal.

With your first connection, you must have been recognized as a client under your own contract, but having simply changed your IP address (the address of the line from the Box), without taking the change of phone number into account. Now, an IP change is common: it is practically enough to "reset" your box.

It is likely that you can connect from any ADSL line configured by SFR for the same type of contract... And it is the identifier that "points" to the correct contract.
