Hello,
Since December 2005, my Casio Exilim EX-S 500 camera has been working perfectly. But since my trip to Spain, it has been having some issues when taking photos (blurry, white, or even scratched photos). I don't know what might be causing this, and I would like to get your opinion. Is it the heat? Too much brightness that caused this? Thank you for your responses.
Configuration: Windows XP Internet Explorer 7.0

Hello everyone,
Bingo, I also have a Casio EX-Z500 and since this morning, my photos are completely overexposed and marked with scratches.
For now, I just need to zoom in a bit and it works again, and of course, it's fine for video or indoors, but reading your comments, I think it’s off to a bad start and that it’s good for the trash.
Yes, it's resolved, but it's gone for all users of this device.

How long had you owned this device? I've noticed with several people that after about 3 years, there were these issues.

Except for certain high-end products that tend to be of good quality, most hifi, video, multimedia, and household appliances have become "disposable." The warranty just expired, and bam, the product breaks down shortly after. That's how it is.

That's why, for certain products, it's better to get extended warranties with exchanges, which are much more advantageous. For example, two and a half years ago, I bought an entry-level TV (which was still really good) at a big store, with a 3-year extended warranty that included exchanges (so 2 years of warranty plus an additional 3 years, and if the product breaks down, it gets exchanged immediately after inspection). Well, after a year of having it, the TV broke down (I have to say it was running for 15 hours a day!). They exchanged it for a newer, brand new and better model (in just one year, the products changed). Recently, the exchanged TV started to have a annoying spot on the screen. Back to customer service. The guy saw it, and as a Christmas gift, they offered to refund me entirely and let me choose a new product, or I could choose to exchange it again, but that would take a bit of time (a week). I opted for a new TV with full HD, larger, much better, all for less than €130! And I'm set for another 5 years now (since I got the exchange extension again!). So there you go. At least now I'm covered.

I agree with you about warranty extensions, but it's important to pay attention to the warranty extension contract. As you mentioned, I prefer to point this out for those who are not used to taking out additional warranties, but the best option is "Warranty + Exchange" because these warranties generally imply "If your product has any defect not caused by breakage or damage, your product will be exchanged." Usually, just the warranty extension does not necessarily cover all defects...
But personally, I advise you to consider the warranties from Fnac; they are not very expensive for PCs (3 years of exchange warranty on a notebook for €79) and for everything related to camera products, Boulanger is quite good (Panasonic TZ7 camera with a 5-year exchange warranty for €79). Admittedly, that's 20 to 25% of the original price, but it can prevent these inconveniences...

Hello
I just encountered this shutter issue with my Exilim... it is indeed a recurring problem with this model... I had mine for 3 years (+2 months) as well. It broke down on me in the USA, and I had to buy another compact camera there...

Hello,
well, I also just had the same problem with my Exilim S500 and, what a coincidence, it's also after returning from San Sebastian that my camera is taking constantly overexposed photos. I tried resetting it several times without success. On the other hand, the video still works perfectly (?).
I've had it since 2005 and I was really happy with it because it fits in a pocket and takes completely decent photos and videos. Too bad...

Hello everyone
I also have an S500 and I'm experiencing the same issue.
Personally, I tried switching to firmware v4 (because I thought it was a software-type problem)
But in reality, it's a hardware issue (apparently widespread as five other people have contacted me with the same problem after a post on a forum)
As previously mentioned, the issue of white photos in broad daylight is due to an excess of light. This is where the shutter comes into play and closes to get the "amount" of sufficient light, and it would be a defective shutter that would cause the white photos...
For this, you can do a very simple test: zoom in as much as possible (it allows better visibility of the shutter), look at the center of the lens, take a photo (without flash of course, otherwise your eyes will remember!) and check at the center of the lens if you see a "slat" closing
If yes, then the problem isn't from there
If not, problem identified! For this, I contacted Nikken, the authorized Casio repairer, and for the cursed sum of €99 including tax, they will change the complete lens + shipping costs at our expense... let's just say it's better to buy a new one with the same features.
Conclusion: too bad, this device has served me well for 3 years for occasional use (vacations and a few events), now its use will be limited to indoor photos with flash, at night, and video which does not have any problems and does not require the mandatory intervention of the shutter.

In any case, if someone has the courage to disassemble it to perhaps simply unstick the shutter, it might work normally again

Sorry for the "bad" news!
This post can be marked as "resolved"
Best regards, Vincent

Thank you very much for your answers and your help. I attempted the little experiment to see if the issue was related to the shutter. While taking a photo, I noticed that the shutter wasn't closing... This may explain my problem, and I will try to "fix" it myself; otherwise, goodbye to my Casio. (My sister also encountered the same problem with the same camera... I think this series had an issue or a manufacturing defect, and I definitely plan to write to the brand to explain this problem to them).

Keep us posted if it works again after you tinkered with it.

I love completely inexperienced people who go and "mess around" with their defective products!!!

A camera is worse than the mechanics of an old clock, with tons of little things that have usually been set to x millimeters of degree, at x micrometer... and you want to tinker with it without the slightest tool at the risk of breaking everything? lol

Are you a kamikaze or what? If your device is damaged, get it repaired. Now, if it's no longer under warranty, it's not worth it. Buy a new one.

As for repairing it yourself, let's just say you could fry everything yourself or even potentially burn everything inside if hypothetically you don't put everything back as it should be!

In the end, it's at your own risk. Personally, even though I'm a good handyman and troubleshooter, I wouldn't do it because I don't have the lens equipment, axes, or precision tools for adjustments like that.

Hello again,
I have new information: I went to the CASIO website and downloaded the latest Firmware 1.04 and installed it on my S500: the overexposure issue has disappeared and everything is back in order. On the Casio website, they indicate that version 1.02 fixes the overexposure problem that some devices experienced. I had no issues updating; just make sure to follow the instructions provided by CASIO carefully. If you still have your EXILIM, please perform the update; it will most likely work again!
Keep me posted, please.
Best regards.

For helene233: just go to the Casio website, in the support or download section, enter the product model and voilà, you can download it, just like when you want or need to update the firmware of any product.

After trying to install firmware 1.04, the same overexposure issue persists....
When zooming in on the photos, I also see "stripes"...
This camera will no longer work for photos, but it will be used for recording outdoor videos of the car...

In the serial number, you shouldn't include any letters, only numbers.
Try again!

I have the same problem. I have an Exilim S500 purchased in 2005 for €400. I think it's done for. I occasionally had bleached and scratched images. They were very overexposed. I cleaned the lens with some water and soap: it got a bit better (but not much!). But within a few weeks, no matter how much I cleaned, all the photos are bleached!
I'm going to buy another camera for Christmas!

My device is no longer under warranty, and the repair would cost much more than a new one, so since I'm considering leaving it in the closet, I'm taking the risk to make a few attempts... when I say "fiddling," it obviously doesn't mean completely disassembling it, but simply trying to unblock the shutter by cleaning it a bit, for example... anyway, my photos can't be worse than they are today...

Could you provide the link to download this firmware? I also just had the problem during my vacation!!!

You just need to go to the Casio website, go to the support or download section, enter the product model, and there you go, you can download it, just like when you want or need to check for a firmware update for any product.

Thank you.
I just tried. It asks me for a serial number, which I entered, but it doesn't accept it, so no download is possible.

Thank you helene233.
That's what I've already done because I registered on the site before downloading but nothing works. I have a serial number with 7 digits. What about you?

helene233

me too I have 7 digits
be careful to type the zero and not an O
that's the mistake I was making and it wasn't working
other than that I don't see anything!

"blurry photos, white ones or even with stripes"

it seems to be several different issues.

indeed, if the photo is blurry (maybe you mean "shaky"), it may mean that either you have taken a too long exposure time without stabilizer or tripod, causing your photo to be shaky due to movements caused by blood circulation and heartbeats, or there is a misaligned lens issue. check with a daytime exposure of a photo you take for example at 1/1000th of a second, and if it behaves the same way, it’s a lens issue. otherwise, it's your exposure time being too long without equipment.

white: exposure time is too long if the subject is already well-lit to begin with. if we want to photograph, I don't know, a monument in broad daylight, we would take an ISO of 100-200, exposure time between 1/500 and 1/2000th of a second, at a focal length between f 2.3 and f5.8 generally. if you take a too long exposure time like 1 second while your subject is already super well-lit, or a super high ISO or too open aperture, then yes, your photo will be white or nearly white because it will be overexposed.

stripes: your lens may be either dirty (dust or fingerprints) or, if it doesn't come off with a microfiber cloth or glasses/optics wipe, it may be scratched.

do some tests and if it remains like this for one or all of them, then you will have to mourn and buy a new camera.

there you go. I hope I’ve perfectly helped.
