In terms of physical setup, Ethernet cables use wall sockets.
These sockets in the offices have an Ethernet connector to which PCs or network devices (printers, etc.) are connected.
Right after the socket, in the wall, begins a cable that goes to another socket, this time near what is called a patch panel.
Cables from all the sockets arrive at this panel, often in a nice unit with labels for each socket.
To create a network, Ethernet cables are interconnected on a switch. Therefore, this is placed in the patch panel. Connecting a socket means linking a cable that goes into the socket on the patch panel side to the switch. Once this is done, anyone connecting to the patched socket will have access to the network.
