Hi potdefraises, here is the solution to your problem:
What happens is that .lnk or .exe or .jpg or etc. is the extension of a shortcut. By opening it by default with an application
you can no longer use shortcuts. Here’s how to fix it.
1- Go to start and in the search bar, type Regedit. Look at the top and click on Regedit.exe. Then click on continue.
2- The registry editor will open and you will see 5 HKEY folders. Click on HKEY_CURRENT_USER
3- Then click on Software
4- Then click on Microsoft
5- Then click on Windows
6- Then click on Current Version
7 Then click on Explorer
8 Then click on FileExts
9- Then click on .lnk or the file type that corresponds to your problem.
10- Then you will see UserChoice. Delete this file.
11- Close the registry editor
12- Log off and restart the session or the computer for your icons to be restored.
For Windows XP:
Go to All Programs, ==> Accessories ==> Command Prompt ==> Type Regedit.exe ==> Enter (Return) ==> Follow the tutorial above.

Hello marcelrub,
For Windows 7, download this file --> seven_exe.reg and put it on the desktop.
Then, restart by tapping F8 or F5 to go to --> safe mode.
When you arrive, right-click on the file --> seven_exe.reg, click on merge, accept even if there is an error message.
Then restart the PC.

Hello
If you have Vista (otherwise do not execute), go to the link below
click on the EXE box, once the file is unzipped, it is a .reg file, and click on it

Here is for system restore:
Start your PC, after the manufacturer’s logo press F8 and select repair Windows, select administrator user on the system and enter the password if it exists and let it proceed,
once logged in choose system restore click next check the option that indicates the appearance of hidden restore points and follow the instructions on the screen until prompted to restart.

Hello,
I have the same problem but I'm on Windows 7. I'm desperate, I've been trying to find a solution for hours. Moreover, I have restored but nothing works. When I right-click for "open with," I choose a program and all my icons are the same and open with that same program.
Thank you for helping me!

Hello, I have the same problem, impossible to restore even in safe mode... everything opens with Windows Media Center, regedit, msconfig, control panel, IE7... well, everything. Can someone help me please? Additionally, this program opens unexpectedly. Thank you for any help you can provide.
So good evening to everyone, I have a solution regarding this issue because it happened to me too. I couldn't open my applications (all .exe files). I specify that I'm on Win7. So here's what I did:
1- go to the start menu
2- type (regedit)
3- go to (key_classes_root
4- then go to (.exe)
5- then you will see two string values appear
1. default REG_SZ exefile
2. Content Type REG_SZ application/x-msdownload (that's how it should be)
because I found in (2) Content Type unidentified or something like that, I don't remember exactly
well, good continuation to everyone, I hope I have been able to help you.

It doesn't work, I see an icon and even if I right-click, I can't open it with another program. For example, if I try to open Simple Comptable, I see the Picture Manager icon and I can't open it with anything else.
When I want to open a file, I have to right-click and then click on Start or Open with, because my files do not open directly with a double click.
Another problem, when I click on Control Panel and then on Add/Remove Programs, I receive a message: application nonexistent!
Thank you for guiding me to resolve this issue.

Hello, I have a similar problem but it's all my applications that open against my will with Windows Media Center. Even for the internet. I can't do anything anymore. I have Windows 7, so if anyone has a solution that would be great!
Hello,
Download this file --> exe_fix_w7.reg and place it on the desktop.
Then restart by tapping F8 or F5 to go into safe mode. Right-click on the file --> exe_fix_w7.reg , agree to merge it into the registry, even if there's an error message, restart, and see what happens.

I didn't follow the conversation, but I solved my problem by uninstalling the program that wanted to open everything, on my end Adobe Reader. =)
For those who have Windows 7 and are experiencing issues with Windows Media Center, I managed to resolve the problem this afternoon by restoring the system to an earlier date. Even regedit did not work.
After restoring the desktop icons and running a system scan, it works.

Message to Permalink for the email (32) to Tomate and 38 to Ozeana 50: I'm having the same problem with Windows Media Center. I can't open any of my files anymore. Do you have a solution, please? (System restore doesn't work). Thank you! I have Windows 7.
Under Windows 7, open the dialog box in the Start menu. Type "System Restore," open the System Restore program, and restore to a date prior to your problem, and there you go... This may take about 15 minutes... your computer will restart by itself... your files will not be affected.
Problem: I installed iTunes and all the desktop icons are changing to .ink (iTunes)
I need your help to go into the Registry Editor up to Microsoft/.../.INK and I do not have it in the editor. What should I do? Thank you very much for your help.
Sincerely

Hello,
Try a System Restore and choose a date before the crash.
Look here, this works for Windows 7, Vista, and XP: Perform a System Restore
