Hi,
the exact terminology is not workgroup and domain,
it's rather workgroup or domain.
The workgroup is an old concept from Windows that dates back to LAN Manager Windows 3.11, using NetBIOS and other charming mechanisms to try to form a very disorganized and completely unsecured network: PCs elect a sort of group leader who lists the machines in the group and shares the list with the others; that's the only function of the workgroup.
On the other hand, we have the domain which is managed by one or more domain controllers, on Windows Server machines.
The domain controllers manage the list of machines, users, and shared resources as well as their access rights/permissions on the network and to the resources, in short, a real administration, much more secure and monitored.
This concept has existed since Windows NT in the Windows family.
