Your Kind Attention.
We are pleased to inform you that you are one of the lucky winners of the COCA COLA promotion regarding the email addresses of internet users. The total value at stake is 50,000,000 Euros and your address has been drawn via a computer selection during our lottery held last week by Coca-Cola. Your email has been selected among the 500 lucky winners who won the sum of 100,000 Euro through the COCA COLA COMPANY promotion.

However, no tickets have been sold but all email addresses have been assigned different ticket numbers for representation and privacy. The selection process was conducted by our mail selection automated machine (TOPAZ) from a database of over 250,000 email addresses drawn from all continents of the world. This lottery is approved by the British Gaming Council and also authorized by the International Association of Gaming Regulators (IAGR). Received as well,
I had the pleasure of conversing by email with Master Gomez Plamer and after just 6 days I was credited €85,000 to my current account. Life is truly wonderful, even in these times of crisis we still have at least the opportunity to become rich without even participating in anything. Sometimes all it takes is to respond to a simple email to win €85,000 in a game you might have been somewhat forcefully signed up for ;)
But seriously??? WTF??? Are there really people who question this when receiving this crap?!!!

I also received this message...
At first, I was really going to send it back with my details, but then I thought I should check if this law firm actually existed, and I came across this page. I'm happy to see that I'm not the only one who received this kind of message, and I'm glad I didn't send anything to claim the amount mentioned, which is a real scam....

Having somewhat, if not greatly, investigated the phenomenon, I take the liberty of responding.
These scams are called "Nigerian scams," in English "scam."
Nigeria is the creator and primary distributor of these scams. They were first disseminated by postal mail, then by fax, and finally by the internet. The United States was the first targeted country. We then saw false inheritances, fake donations, and romance scams.
They closely resemble those that Vidocq described in his book "Les voleurs." These scams, then called "Letters from Jerusalem," were launched in France at the end of the 18th century and the beginning of the 19th century. Most authors of this scam were incarcerated in the Toulon penal colony or held in the Bicetre prison, near Paris. It is from this latter location that the name would come, as a "rue de Jérusalem" ran along the walls of Bicetre (Wikipedia).
These scams quickly spread to neighboring West African countries: Sierra Leone, Ghana, Benin, Ivory Coast, Togo, Burkina Faso, and finally Cameroon.
It can be said that they are currently spreading to other bordering countries like Mali and Niger.
It is worth noting that Nigeria and Ghana, English-speaking countries, "take care of" English-speaking countries. The others handle French-speaking countries in Europe.
Thus, since 2007, Ivory Coast has been aggressively targeting France, Belgium, and Switzerland.
Nigerians have set up more or less large networks and organized gangs in all these countries, infiltrating many official organizations and training the idle population, mainly the youth, in the art of scamming.
The cybercafés of Abidjan have been taken over by these scammers known as "brouteurs." These brouteurs are often the managers of cybercafés who "work" under the control of Nigerians. Each takes their commission along the way.
A brouteur from Abidjan engages in multiple types of scams. Thus, they increase registrations on dating sites, chat rooms, etc., posing as women but also posting fake ads, etc. It is worth noting that Benin specializes in fake ads.
A brouteur can operate either in isolation or in an organized gang and can have multiple victims at the same time (up to ten) for the most aggressive ones.
It is not a matter of labeling Africa as a continent of scammers but rather demonstrating the origin of these scams, specifically a large part of West Africa, which thankfully does not consist solely of ill-intentioned people or scammers.

But Coca-Cola is a well-known company and I sent my wishes by email with Coca-Cola. It's true that at first I was a bit skeptical, but I saw the name of a lawyer with the Coca-Cola logo, so I let myself be caught tempted by the winnings, especially during this crisis period, and I replied by giving my contact details. But when I received the email saying I had to pay 83 euros, I understood it was a scam!
NEVER, NEVER, NEVER!! Above all, never give out your personal information (street address, city, phone number) AND even LESS: your bank details, your social security number, your credit card numbers...
Scammers will assume any identity to catch you and will dangle anything in front of you.
If you have time, you can contact the company they claim to represent (in the example above "Coca-Cola"), it's simple, with a quick Google search, you will find Coca-Cola's contact information, you can send them an email forwarding the scam message you received; with this, they can stop the hoax.
Here, (USA) they also claim to be from banking institutions and say there has been an error with your account - know that NEVER will your bank or any financial institution contact you by email. The best course of action is to call your bank and explain, once again, that you received this type of email. The same goes for your car insurance company, etc.
Scams on the web are rampant. You must remain very alert.

Hello,
It is indeed a scam, this site has some interesting details on the subject.
Obviously, when you are a victim of this type of abuse, report it to your ISP or host or even to your email service.

I received exactly the same message as you today; I suspected it was a scam, but I wanted to see what it was about, so I typed in the name of the lawyer. I am in my fifth year of law studies and reading your messages, I feel compelled to respond:
in France, any lottery is conducted under the control of a bailiff, not a lawyer.
No, we cannot band together to sue them as is possible with class actions in the USA; some people have been trying for a few years to introduce this type of action in France, but resistance from MEDEF, among others, blocks it every time. So in France, one would have to file a lawsuit one by one, which is long, tedious, and costly...
As one of you mentioned, it is necessary to complain to your host, your email service, and others, and above all, be very careful about where you enter your email address. If they got it, it's because at some point, you gave it to a file (like a newsletter or something). In particular, people with children should be careful, as much more gullible teens rush in and give their addresses like that (I know some who almost faced very serious issues with their daughter, and I’m not just talking about scams).
There you go, good evening to all and Merry Christmas.

I received the same letter and of course I sent my contact details, but that's it. I believe we should do some kind of petition and even file a complaint so that they compensate us.
Tien Tien, I just received the email here in Canada... come on... see if I’m going to communicate with a fictional law office in Europe, honestly

MARC Ivorian: I say believing in such a thing would be stupid... don't get involved in these types of traps if you know your intention on the internet isn't to pull profiles equally... be vigilant because these Nigerian scammers who have filled our country are everywhere in the world and this is their only business which is to scam; otherwise, it's rare for Ivorians to engage in this game, okay. Thank you.
