Hello everyone,
So, when I start my Apple Mac OS X computer, a globe logo appears
and it blinks. Also, the computer takes longer to boot than usual.
Could someone please help me and tell me what the problem is?

Thank you for replying :)
Configuration: Mac OS X Safari 525.13

Hello,

The globe during startup is not alarming at all. It is not the manifestation of a virus or an extraterrestrial takeover. It means that the Mac is attempting to start up from an external hard drive over the network. Obviously, it fails and therefore automatically returns to its good old internal hard drive.

Solution, because it's still annoying: Once the Mac is started (of course!), go to Apple Menu > System Preferences > Startup Disk. In the window, you should then see the icon of your hard drive and that famous globe. Click on the hard drive icon and close System Preferences. The next startup should be "normal".

Explanation: it happens (= I don’t really know). As the false manipulation (accidentally opening System Preferences?) is unlikely, it might be the aborted download of HotBar that caused this little glitch.

Best regards.

Chris 94 ,

when you say to click on the hard drive, but I only have the choice between the file "Mac OS X, 10.4.11 on Macintosh HD" and "network startup".

Should I click on the file "Mac OS X, 10.4.11 on Macintosh HD"?

(sorry I’m terrible with computers :S)

Hello Kiwi95,

Did you install anything before shutting down or clicking the restart button? If so, what??

Or did you change anything before shutting down? If so, try to remember what it was.

I'm waiting for your response with more precision about your OS = 10.3.9 or 10.4.10, or 10.5.3. What is connected to the machine via USB, Firewire, etc...?

Thank you

Hi Pascalou,

yes, I started downloading something called "hotbar" but I canceled the download and deleted it.

I have Mac OS X version 10.4.8.

As for the connection: I have internet via USB. Otherwise, FireWire and everything was in the installation CD.

Hello kiwi, I looked into your problem a bit, and that you downloaded something called "hotbar" seems curious to me because apparently it's some sort of virus; =O, so without knowing anything about it, I’m quite astonished,
anyway here’s what I found about hot bars

Hello Mutinette,

I went to the address you provided and I did some research. The sites say it's a tool for exploring the internet (the websites mention how to erase it, but I already deleted it. Moreover, they show how to uninstall it on Windows while I have a Mac)

But on the Mac, there are no more traces of "hotbar" yet the globe icon still appears.

I still don't understand why.

Thank you, Mutinette, for trying to help me.

That works out well, I also have a Mac, but I admit I'm stuck here. I know we're a bit handicapped with Macs since many things mainly concern PCs, which is normal as they represent a larger share of the market, but that's no reason to neglect us, damn it! =)))))))))! Listen, if you can wait with your globe until Wednesday, I have a Mac technician coming over for some small issues I'm also facing, I could ask him the question. But also try to contact your Mac dealer on your side. In the meantime, I'll see if I can find something else on Google about hotbars.

Thank you very much, Mutinette !!

Anyway, I was planning to call Apple customer support and technical support tomorrow. (And of course, when you want to call on Saturday, it’s closed -_- ".)

It’s true that with Macs there isn’t enough information; for example, when you buy it, nothing is indicated, it’s obviously up to us to test everything and discover things for ourselves! Plus, it’s really very different from Windows.

But otherwise, what problems have you encountered with Mac?

When I bought the Mac, I thought I would be safe from any problems, unlike Windows, but I realize that I may have been wrong....

Thanks again, Mutinette !!!

Yes! Kiwi95, yes that's right. Since I know the trick but, luckily, I don't use it very often at all, I had forgotten that what we see is the system folder of the boot disk (the hard drive). So you can click on it and then on the "restart" button to immediately test the effect.

Hi
I'm a bit late on this, but anyway... I had the Earth spinning too. Very nice!
Personally, I pressed the "brightness down" button right after starting the computer (I was on the train with not much battery), so that might be the cause (just like Alt allows you to select Windows at startup)??

Good evening,

In principle, the "brightness down" button should not cause this effect at all! See the proposed solutions above.

Sincerely.

Hello Chris.

I received your message, but I'm really not good at this, and as a result, I can't find my username in the forum list to thank you for your advice....
so I'm using your username from one of your replies to another member....
If I may take advantage.... could you tell me how to navigate this forum?
I had replied to you by email, but that can't happen since I don't have your address!
- (little detail.... I'm quite blonde (ha ha ha))
Best regards.

Hello, Madchka,

Blondness rhymes with freshness, happiness, warmth :-) so it seems that freshness and warmth can go well together.

Indeed, you seem to be well registered on CCM. Here is your profile and the list of your posts.

In fact, when you want to log into CCM as a registered member, you enter your username at the top right and, just below, your password, then you click on "login". This gets rid of ads and gives you access to other forums.

On the current page, I found your profile using "Statistics", rather high up, on the same line as "Support Platforms". On the "statistics" page, a search box allows you to find usernames (and the number of posts) and, by clicking on the username, to see the corresponding profile from which, by another click, you can reach the list of posts.

When you are "logged in" (i.e. entered a session as a member), there is a list of your posts that appears on the right side of the page, from the most recent to the oldest. In fact, you can display more or less (I’ve made a bit over 3000, they are not all visible there, fortunately). When someone adds a post to one of them, it moves to the top line and appears in bold.

With this, I think that, regardless of the shade of your hair, you can start to manage on your own. For using the Mac, since you are a beginner, I strongly encourage you to read carefully this post by Sanspseudo and to follow the links it provides, it’s a goldmine for beginners and others.

Best regards.

Hello, Madchka,

Thank you for the thumbs up :-)

Regarding the follow-up, I'm coming back to the desire to send me an email, mentioned a bit earlier. Indeed, my email addresses are not there, not even a throwaway address (which is given where one needs to be cautious). It is strongly advised not to leave your addresses publicly on the net (in posts or profiles) because it is a way to "invite" spam, scams, and other unwanted emails.

However, CCM provides "personal messages" (PM)... By going through my profile, you can send me one — I actually suggest we use this method from now on to avoid cluttering other discussions — to privately clarify certain details. I've used it to try to defuse conflicts or check in with people who often come here and whose attitude I find likable.

When you are logged in, your username appears at the top right. Below, is there a little envelope? If it is blinking, it means you have received one or more PMs; the number is indicated next to it. Click on the envelope to access your PM list...

Exercise: I will send you a PM and you reply to me ;-)

Hello kiwi, after all, a globe is pretty nice! ;=)))) And if your computer turns on, even if it's a bit slower than usual, that's not a problem, just check if the installation is going well (firewall and all that stuff) and don't worry, that logo might disappear just like it came, or else try pressing escape when you see the logo, it might be a little prankster who sent you that, a not-so-harmless virus, but anyway, without being a computer whiz, I don't think it's a big deal, however, don't click on it, you never know!!! Keep me updated.

Hello Mutinette,
Yes, the globe is pretty cool lol, but it's still a bit worrying :S.

Otherwise, everything was well set up on the computer (firewall and all) but now I'm going to do the updates and I'll see.
I really hope it's not a virus, especially since Macs are known for their antivirus...

And if the logo persists, I'll try to hit escape.

Thanks for your help!

Hello kiwi, I encountered very few problems with Mac, aside from the "panic" of being a beginner!;=) In fact, I managed on my own pretty well, gathering information here and there whenever I wanted to do something. The forums were also helpful, as were Mac owners. I'm not trying to flatter anyone, but I'm happy with CCM; there's also a nice little forum that often kindly helped me out, it's the "Mac Auvergne" forum, which covers all regions. I also made a few incursions into "Mac Bidouille," but it's a large forum that's quite complex and difficult to navigate. Then there's another Mac forum that I won't name because I don't want to discredit anyone, where I also met some very nice people, but it's a forum with some very elitist and aggressive individuals. Overall, right from the start, I was able to do quite a few small things and I find that Mac is "easier" to use for a novice than PC. I don't know if I would get used to PC; it doesn't appeal to me. In any case, you have to be very patient and persistent, and you'll always find a solution to a problem eventually. As for technical issues with the machine, no problems except for the defective motherboard that Mac replaced for me free of charge. Don't regret your choice at all; once you're more accustomed, you'll see that it's wonderful, even if we sometimes encounter a few small frustrations. If you want us to continue corresponding, click on my username and send me a PM (private message); I might be able to help you with some small things (I'm not very skilled in IT, but I do use it quite a bit). There you go, have a great day!
