How to access the Device Manager in Mac OS X 10

Hello,
my Mac no longer recognizes my hard drive...
it doesn't appear anywhere even though it should be on my desktop as usual!
how do I access the device manager?
how can I find it, it doesn't show up anywhere, neither on the desktop nor in Finder, so where???
