Hello,
my Canon PIMA MP170 printer is displaying the following error message:
Check printer 5800 (which I assume is an error code) on my computer, when I try to print, the following message appears: "The ink waste tank is full, contact maintenance service to change the tank."
Unfortunately, I don't have a maintenance service, I bought my printer two years ago at a supermarket. Has anyone else encountered this problem?
Thank you for your help, ...

re good evening, for almost all types of Canon here is the procedure to follow
*
1) Power off printer
2) Hold RESUME button then press and hold POWER. (The beeper MAY sound once, or may not depending on your model.)
3) Hold POWER and Release RESUME.
4) Press RESUME twice then release both POWER and RESUME buttons.
5) When the indicator lights steady, press RESUME 4 times (for the S900, 3 times for the 8200 apparently).
6) Press power to set data.
7) Print away!
it’s true it’s in English but not too complicated
good luck
ps: they say to look on the net
best regards

Hello
My MP170 was out of order with:
Check the ink
U052
on the display..
This persists after changing these -expensive- cartridges.
I disassembled it as mentioned in the previous post and tried to reset it (I can't get the 'idle' message).
No changes and the little orange triangle is flashing (15 times)....
When I try to print I get the following message:
"The following cartridge cannot be recognized.
Black
Color
Printing is not possible because the ink cartridge may not be installed correctly or may not be compatible with this printer.
Please install the appropriate ink cartridge."
I specify that the cartridges are Canon..
If anyone sees what to do, I’m all ears!
Best regards
BCh

Hello, my MP170 refuses to restart with refilled cartridges (in perfect condition)
the manipulations I know thanks to you are not working. I have the same problem with an IP2600.
Also, do you know of an adhesive that doesn't leak (to reassemble a cartridge)?
Thanks in advance to everyone

Hello. I have followed the troubleshooting steps provided by the previous contact, cleaned the "pad" under the cartridges, and everything remains while I was at it. I turn it back on, and it starts again: the "off/on" button is flashing, as well as the small triangle, which is flashing in yellow. What should I do? Thank you for kindly letting me know how to troubleshoot this. Best regards. bedel.gerard@neuf.fr

Hello Martine, I continued searching and I found this:
The MPTool is designed for service works with the Canon MP-Series printers. Low-Level mode is currently supported for MP150, MP160, MP170, MP180, MP450, MP460. MP150, MP160, MP170, MP180, MP450, MP460.
We can use this tool to reset the ink counter for black and color. There are three modes in which Canon MP-series printers can operate:
1. Normal
2. Service and
3. Low-level.
mptool_screen.jpg
Normal - is the mode in which the printer operates normally.
Service - is the mode in which you can perform service operations using the printer buttons. To switch the Canon MP-series printer to “Service” mode you should:
1) Turn off the printer.
2) Press and hold the lift/resume printing button.
3) Press and hold the printer button.
4) Release the lift/resume printing button.
5) Double-click restore/print.
6) Release the printer button.
After that, the green LED will start flashing (the flashing time depends on the printer model), then it will remain steadily on and the printer will switch to “Service” mode.
Low-Level - is intended for low-level operations with the printer's EEPROM, in this mode MPTool works with the printer. To switch the MP-Series printer to Low-Level mode you should:
1) Turn off the printer from the network.
2) Press and hold the button.
3) Connect the printer to the network.
4) Click lift/resume printing.
5) Release the button.

You need to remove the front panel, then there are two screws at the front and two at the back, that's all.
Thank you very much to everyone for your responses
It’s working again on my end
Feel free to take off the right side cover, and to make it easier, remove the white cart that supports the two pads
Be careful, there’s a spring underneath, and to pull the cart towards you, there’s a tab on the right under the cart that acts as a stop with the cover. A small screwdriver to lift it, and there you go, it works.
Best regards
Happy New Year to everyone

I'm in a jam with this error 6500, nothing works, and I really need it. So if someone has a solution, please let me know. Thanks to everyone.
Hello,
I managed to troubleshoot it as follows: you need to disassemble your printer and clean the small pad that is soaked in ink. Then perform a reset as follows:
Here is the reset procedure:
CANON PIXMA MP170 (error 5b00) full waste ink tank
1 Turn off the printer
2 Press and hold the STOP button (Red Triangle)
3 While holding down STOP, press and hold ON/OFF
4 Release only STOP and press STOP twice quickly (while keeping ON/OFF pressed)
5 Release everything until the word "idle" appears under CANON on the screen
6 Press STOP four times quickly and then ON/OFF twice quickly
7 Turn off the printer and turn it back on normally...
That's it, it's done.

I have a CANON MP 170 printer that I've had for a few years. It has always satisfied me. But for a few days now, I am having a problem: as soon as I turn it on, the screen shows 5800, like "Martine." I found the issue: the used ink reservoir is full. But where exactly is this reservoir located? Rather than asking CANON, I would prefer to receive a solution from a user who has encountered this type of problem. Thank you in advance! BEDEL;GERARD@NEUF;FR
Hello everyone ^^
I just had the same issue, and thanks to this clear and quick method, it's working normally again.
Thank you for your help.
I just had the same issue, and thanks to this clear and quick method, it's working normally again.
Thank you for your help.
I have been experiencing a "paper jam" for the past two days that I can't get rid of. I cleaned the cartridges and followed the restart procedure recommended by KROLDU. This successfully eliminated the "full waste ink reservoir" issue and the "Check Printer 5800" message, but the "paper jam" persists. How does the "paper jam" detection work? Could it be dirty as well? It is true that ink had splattered abundantly over the small gears, etc.
Thank you for giving me your opinion and advice on this matter.
Thank you for the disassembly/cleaning procedure for the ink absorber pads and for getting rid of the message "the used ink tank is full." Clarifications: it's messy, best to remove the pads from their rubber housing with tweezers (if "mom" agrees) rather than ejecting them with a small screwdriver at the bottom of the casing...
So I have the message "Check the printer - 5100"
Unfortunately, the reset procedure mentioned above does not solve the problem.
This error should not be related to the ink. I also have the error in scanner mode.
Is there anyone who could help me?
Hope to see you soon.
thank you very much for your explanations, it works great, see you later!
