Hello everyone,
I have a problem with all the .lnk files on my PC.
All the shortcuts on my desktop and in the start menu have the same icon (Notepad because I accidentally set it to open with Notepad) and don't open anything at all. However, the shortcut paths are correctly defined (the links to the .exe files are fine).
Should I associate a specific program in 'open with' for this type of file??
Additionally, I have ANOTHER problem! I'm on Windows XP and when I type regedit in the run command, I only have 2 seconds before the window closes by itself!! So, I can't go check in HKEY...
Thanks in advance for your help because this is really getting on my nerves!!!

On the contrary, you need to disassociate Notepad from the lnk. Instead of associating it with a program, you do the opposite...

I also have problems with shortcuts and Word pad, what can I do??
Launch "Regedit" and in "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.lnk", delete the "UserChoice" folder and then restart the session.
To launch regedit, you will first need to type "cmd" in the start menu search box (for Vista and Seven).

Hello mid00, I have the same problem with my desktop icons and programs in "Start"; Your solution seems to work under Vista or 7 but I still have my good XP Pro system; In my registry, I cannot find the folder (UserChoice). Under XP, is there a folder with a different name that needs to be deleted?
Thank you in advance

Thank you, it's a good idea, I have unassociated Notepad from .lnk.
But now all my shortcut icons look like .dat files, and no .lnk files work. How can I restore the functionality and appearance of all these icons?
All suggestions are welcome,
thank you in advance.

Hello!
Following your issue, I quickly searched and found this fix:
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/fileassoc/linkfile_fix.zip
(I had a friend who had the same problem)
According to the site, you just need to unzip the file and run the .reg (to include the settings in the registry)
Let me know if this solves your problem.

The best answer is presented by: nalouma57 - it really works well! On Windows 7 & on Vista too
-------------------------------------------------------------------
I solved my problem with a maneuver mentioned in another message (I did it under the supervision of a close computer specialist)
Launch Regedit.exe (in search)
search for HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Fileexts\.lnk
delete the "Userchoice" folder
restart the session
the shortcuts have returned as before and the links too. I specify that I am on Vista.

Thank you for the help, it's the best solution with this link:

Thank you also to NALOURNA 57, I confirm that their fix also works on Windows 7, great!
Reminder of the fix for the 'lnk' extension problems on all the shortcuts on the desktop that have become inoperable:
"Launch Regedit.exe (in search)
search for HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Fileexts\.lnk
delete the "UserChoice" folder
restart the session
the shortcuts have returned to their previous state and the links too...."

Well, I propose a solution for Vista users. My problem was the same, namely that I accidentally opened a desktop software with the "Word Pad" program and all the other desktop shortcut icons had .lnk extensions and opened with WordPad.
No need for restoration with this method:
Go to "Start", "default programs", in the window click on "choose your default programs".
The idea is to reassign to a program the extensions it is meant for by default, so .jpeg for Paint (among others) or .html for Internet Explorer.
If the program you associated your icons with is not in the list, as was the case for WordPad, then select another one that is (Internet Explorer for example) by right-clicking and opening with... on one of the desktop icons, then in the "set your default programs" window, select "choose defaults for this program" and then "set this program as default".
Conclusion: Internet Explorer will only be linked to the .html extensions by default and the other non-html shortcuts (in other words, all the others) will regain their respective associated programs and icons;

In case your suggestion addresses my message from yesterday, I would like to point out that the SmartScreen filter strongly advises against this download ("risk of deception," to use its terms, and potential damage to the computer...).
In any case, I have purely and simply deleted the .ink file a while after my message. My shortcut problems persist, but I have no others following this deletion. I plan to proceed with a recovery (from over a year ago) of my system, but this poses a dilemma regarding the files and software installed since that date (no need to discuss Windows 7 file backup; it does not satisfy me). So before my next reinstallation, I'm trying everything .... These shortcut issues could be explained by the presence of a virus (according to my dealer, who did not completely convince me). Thank you for your suggestion in any case (if it was intended for me).

Hello, I thank Ahmedtun for this website, it works well with Windows 7, you just have to click on the .lnk extension and install the registry key

Hello, I have the solution that works 100% on Windows Seven, it works wonderfully
for Windows 7 => download these 2 files and place them on the desktop.
=> seven_lnk.reg
= seven_exe.reg
then restart by tapping F8 or F5 to enter safe mode
upon arrival on the desktop, right-click on the file seven_exe.reg, accept to merge it into the registry, do the same with the other file seven_lnk.reg, even if there is an error message for the 2 executed files, restart normally and see if everything has returned to normal.

Good evening,
I have Windows Vista and I'm also having problems with my shortcuts that have the .lnk extension.
I downloaded the QUAD Registry Cleaner software, which is paid, and I still have my issue.
With the default configuration in the Start menu, I can't get it to work either.
Does anyone have a solution to this problem?
Thanks in advance.
Best regards.

I also thank Ahmedtun, it works perfectly, the only issue is that the icons all remain the same... but that's much less serious.
J'avais le même problème, et c'est résolu grâce aux instructions d'Ahmedtun et Vistalnk. Merci pour tout.
