No page display issues under Vista

Hello,
I have a new desktop computer running Windows Vista. The computer connects fine both wired and over Wi-Fi (some software was able to download updates). However, when I try to view web pages, regardless of the site, neither IE7 nor Firefox can display them (Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage, or a blank page for Firefox).
The firewall is not the cause, because even when disabled the problem persists.
I have a SpeedTouch ST510 V6 modem.
I should note that I have never managed to display web pages on this computer.
By contrast, internet works fine on two other laptops with Windows XP.
I don’t know where the problem comes from or how to fix it.

Thanks in advance to everyone who can help.

I just found out where my problem comes from: by stopping Avast antivirus, I was able to display Google’s web page.
However I still don’t know how to configure Avast to be able to display web pages, I’ll study that.

I noticed that it was the WEB resident protection that was the problem; once disabled, web pages display correctly. However, regardless of its configuration (normal or high), as soon as it runs it becomes impossible to display any web page. That’s annoying because I liked Avast, which never gave me trouble on XP. If someone knows how to configure Avast so that internet works on Vista, I’d be grateful.
Configuration: Windows Vista Firefox 2.0.0.11

Thank you, thank you, thank you! :D

It had been a long time since I was wondering why everything was working (Google Desktop, updates, various pings...) EXCEPT the display of internet pages (IE or FF)
Thanks to this post, I can surf again (and work), and especially move to my new computer :)
(on Vista, but I don't know yet if it's better)

For those passing by, this is something to try before anything else; I myself fell onto many forums where people advise touching lots of things... not necessarily necessary, or even dangerous (for the OS stability).
