Hello, my problem seems to be the same as yours. Mine has been going on for one or two months, so I've had time to observe it.
Basically, the symptoms are:
- When I connect my iPod to my computer, the PC doesn't recognize it, and a Mac doesn't either; I tried, and it makes no difference.
- The iPod crashes (to debug it, you just have to press the center button and menu for 6 seconds, but it crashes again in a second if it's still connected to the computer).
- If, by miracle, the iPod is recognized by the PC (which happened when the problem started) and you try to look in My Computer... you can't see its name, and if you click on it to see what's inside, the computer crashes.

Hi,
Happy New Year 2008!
If your iPod is write-protected, it means that you have a lock on your iPod that is activated. For the driver, if you have a driver (small CD) that was delivered with your iPod, reinstall it; otherwise, we will proceed differently.
Also, make sure you have it plugged into an activated USB port.

Hello
I have a huge problem with my new iPod Classic 160GB. I bought it online.
When I connect it to my Windows XP PC, it is not recognized. Therefore, it is also not recognized by iTunes. I've tried everything: uninstalling iTunes, installing the new version, disabling & re-enabling devices, switching to disk mode (that doesn't work either), swapping USB cables between my old & new iPod, resetting the iPod, nothing works. What I don't understand is that my computer rejects it while my old iPod (nano 8GB) worked perfectly...
I'm seriously starting to worry, if you have a solution I'm all ears because I'm really fed up, it's been 4 days straight that I’ve been browsing forums looking for ideas. I've searched the Apple site, I've tried everything. I should mention that when I connected it to my parents' computer (also Windows XP) everything worked, and the iPod displayed "connected." Right now it charges on the computer but there are no usual icons. I also noticed that if I leave the iPod connected while restarting the computer, it's as if it recognizes it, showing "connected" etc...
I'm begging you, if you see any other ways to finally get my iPod working, please let me know!
Help me, please! >.<

And I also wanted to say that the message that appears when I connect my iPod Classic 160 Gb to my computer is directly: "Unable to install this hardware
A problem occurred during the installation of this hardware: iPod An error occurred during the installation of the device Invalid data. Click Finish to close the Wizard."
The computer does not give me a choice, and I tried going into the device manager, updating the driver, disabling, uninstalling, reactivating, reinstalling, nothing worked either...
Please help me... T___T
