Hello,
I have a SONY DCR HC 42E and Adobe Premiere Elements 2. I can't seem to capture; it always tells me "acquisition device offline." I also tried on another computer with a demo of Premiere Pro, and I still get the same thing. I noticed that my camcorder model doesn't appear in Adobe's list when setting up hardware and devices; ... so I tried to find updates in case that was the issue, but I couldn't find anything for Premiere Elements 2.
I have tried with both USB 2 and 1394 cables, modified the camcorder settings for data transfer, etc., but nothing works!
After hours and hours of searching online, some suggested deleting certain codecs, which I did, but there was no change.
I removed DivX players, etc. from my computer. ..
I'm out of ideas other than selling everything and buying something else!!!!
But I won't tell you my disappointment because until now, I always found this software wonderful (I use Photoshop a lot), and when I bought Sony, I never imagined I would have problems like this!
Up until now, I've been using a small software that came with the camcorder to transfer files, and then I open my AVI files with Adobe Premiere, but this process is longer since the cam's software is a bit "crappy", but it works!!
My simple wish is to transfer from the camcorder to Adobe; ... nothing more.
So if you could enlighten me and provide your advice ... I
Thank you in advance

Sony would not deliver the DCR HC 42 E camcorder with Premiere Elements if the capture could not be done with it. This means you are making mistakes. The manual and the help file explain how to use it.
In Premiere El: click on "DV Camcorder, ...". The capture panel opens. At the top right, click on the button that represents a camcorder. For "Capture Settings," choose DV capture. For "Device Control," select "DV/HDV device control" and click on "Options": under "Device Brand," select Sony, and under "Device Type," select the model that concerns you. Click OK. -
Hello,
I have the same problem, I can't make the acquisition either and yet I have a Sony DCR-PC109E. If anyone has succeeded, thank you for helping me. -
Either the camcorder is not recognized by the PC (driver not installed), in which case no video software will be able to capture, or it's Adobe that does not recognize that type of camcorder.
A small test:
Try to capture with Movie Maker (most of the time already installed with Windows). If it works, there is indeed a problem with Premiere Elements. In that case, contact customer service for a solution.
If Movie Maker refuses the capture, proceed to reinstall the camcorder driver. -
Now, it's clearer. There's a recognition problem with the camcorder in Premiere Elements
Another attempt
Open Premiere Elements > select "DV camcorder ...", the capture panel opens.
At the top right (at least in version 3) click on the button with the camcorder > select hardware control > DV hardware control. Click on options > under "hardware brand" select SONY from the dropdown menu, under "hardware type" check if the camcorder is listed (or similar) > select. If not, try different options, including "standard".
To be continued... -
I also tried in standard and with Sony, my camcorder is the DCR-PC109E which does not appear in the list :( so I tried similar products and still nothing works, I don’t understand at all I settled for Pinnacle Studio 11 which recognizes it... will Studio 11 give me the same range of possibilities as Premiere Elements??? Otherwise, what can I do to remove this off mode knowing that I can still control my camcorder using the Premiere interface (rewind, forward, stop, play) but the visualization is done on my camcorder and not in the Adobe preview screen...
Thank you for your help, it's cool -
I just did a test with Premiere Elements 3.0 and Premiere 4.0
With version 3.0, I'm encountering the same problem as you (no image despite the control) but with version 4.0, no problem at all.
There is no comparison between Pinnacle Studio 11 and Premiere Elements:
Studio 11 only has one track (+ 1 additional track for image overlay) which significantly reduces editing possibilities. No transparency effects, no chrominance, and no ability to create 3D images, etc.
The new version of Premiere Elements (4.0) is greatly improved and user-friendly. It ranks this software in second place, after Video Deluxe 2008 Plus (at the same price), which is the most complete of all.
Pinnacle Studio 11 is closer to Movie Maker than to Video Deluxe, but at a cost of €99. The price is excessive. -
Sure, I'll give the first elements 4.0 a try, which as you said is more user-friendly and at least it works. Thank you for your help, I'll keep you updated :D
Thank you -
I installed Adobe Premiere Elements 4.0 and it recognizes my camcorder online, but I still can't do the capture. Frame by frame it works, but when I want to do a real capture it seems to freeze, I can't press the buttons on the interface anymore, so I can't do the capture. Yet I've got 1.6GHz x2 with 1GB of RAM running Windows XP; I think it should work anyway!!!
Thanks -
My camcorder is the DCR P109E, and I did this maneuver, but the capture won't start even though I click on "get the video." My camcorder is correctly referenced as Sony, but I don't have the choice of models; the only option is marked as standard, and in the status check, it says detected and online. Despite this, even if I click on get... I'm at the bottom of the pit; I feel like I'm the only one who can't do it :( Is there a setting to configure on the camcorder??? Am I missing something, a plug-in or something like that? Please help me!!!! I am in Bordeaux; I can travel for someone to show me, or I can invite them!!!
Thank you for helping me. -

Hello everyone,
to address the acquisition problem, I recommend a small, very easy-to-use capture software: CaptureFlux, which captures in very good quality compared to Movie Maker.
However, which format should I choose to get the best video output and the best encoding quality? I’m a bit lost in all these formats.
Thank you. -
