interference on Freebox TV Solved

Question

I have a problem with the HD box of my Freebox. There's a very unpleasant background noise, and the intensity of this noise is proportional to the brightness of the image, meaning that the more white areas there are in the image, the higher the noise level, while conversely, the darker the image is, the less this noise is present. If I mute the sound using the Free remote, of course there is no sound, but the noise is still there! This phenomenon is more noticeable during the day than in the evening after 9 PM, and it is also amplified during commercial breaks. Is this an ADSL filter problem? Or an issue with my line? Can someone shed some light on this phenomenon?

Hello,
I encountered an issue with background noise on my Freebox TV: a noise like electrical hum, particularly present in the Free menus and submenus like FTP, radio, or when displaying information about ongoing broadcasts. I suspect it comes from the supplied SCART cable. I replaced it with an HDMI cable, and that completely solved my problem.

Hello,  I've been having the same problem as you for a few days... I saw that yours seems to be resolved, can you tell me how you did it? I restarted both boxes, redid all the connections, but there's still this noise, I have to turn the volume all the way up, and it gives me a headache! My noise problem is absolutely not resolved; in fact, I don’t see what made you think that.
What I do to limit the noise is to set the volume to max with the Free remote, then I adjust the TV volume; that's the only way I can limit this noise. However, the noise in question is more significant during the day than in the evening: it starts to diminish from 8:45 PM, thankfully for the evening shows. But it also depends on the days; it's not the same every day. So on days when it’s unbearable, I switch to something else (DVD or recording).
By the way, I really like Free’s ad! with their famous "Cretin.fr" people will eventually stop saying Free, and start saying Crétin, because by always wanting to appear as the best, they've been outpaced by other service providers; recently, Free has fallen to the bottom of the ranking for TV.

I also have an identical issue; but the background noise is only present when there are "messages" overlaying the image: when changing channels and Free displays the channel's characteristics, when there are "breaking news," when I program the recorder.

I've always found a solution to my little problems thanks to all of you. Thank you! I hope you'll help me today as well.
Very often, a few minutes after turning on the Freebox TV, it starts making a noise that resembles loading or ventilation. This lasts about 10 to 15 minutes!! It's long!! I have to turn up the volume to mask this noise. Then it stops, but it can also start again a few hours later.

Hello,

I have a similar problem with a Sony TV and a Livebox. I think it comes from the TV, not from Free (for you) or Orange (for me).
Indeed, the sound on the Sony goes from 0 to 100, and as soon as I exceed 40 with the TV, it produces background noise that depends on the intensity of the colors. (Even the sound from the Livebox is muted!)

So, I set the TV volume to 25 and increase the sound from the Livebox. Otherwise, it’s unbearable.

Let us know if your TV is a Sony; that might be the issue. (Sony Bravia in my case.)

I just received the HD box and I have the same problem. Since I don't have a TV, I know it's due to the powerline adapters. It annoys me because this company has NO RESPECT for the consumer! It’s unacceptable to offer a product that can be harmful to consumers' health! I switched on my Free 15 minutes ago and I've had a headache since the first minute! I am going to cancel my contract because I cannot stand this horrible noise every day...we pay to receive quality service...at least a service that doesn’t make me sick!

It's not Free's fault. It's indeed the powerline adapters (CPL) that are causing problems, generating noise, but any powerline adapter would give you the same issue: powerline technology is used to network the two boxes through your electrical cables. The data traveling on the electrical cables creates disturbances that can be felt by certain devices like speakers. So, if there is anyone to blame, it's more likely the TV or speaker manufacturer that poorly isolated their equipment electrically. As a solution, try to keep the powerline adapters and the noisy device's plug as far apart as possible (electrically). Otherwise, you can also use a filtered power socket or multi-socket (or isolated, or I don't know the exact term, but it basically acts as a filter) to connect the TV.

I have exactly the same problem: a nasty background noise is heard when the freeboxHD displays its interfaces on the screen. It seems to me that the larger the interface, the louder the noise as well.
I confirm that it is not the proximity of the powerline adapters to the TV that is causing the problem, nor the WIFI, as I tried connecting the freebox to the freeboxHD directly via an ethernet cable.
The only workaround I found is to lower the TV's volume and increase the freeboxHD's volume, but that remains manual; I would really like to find a real solution to the problem :/ Especially since it limits the overall listening volume when I want to completely mask the noise...

My TV could also be the issue: I haven't been able to test with another TV yet, but maybe someone on the forum has already tried it?

Has anyone managed to get information from Free's customer service? A DIY fix to resolve the issue?

Hello everyone,

I'm also experiencing a background noise associated with the TV sound using Free; I'm connected via Ethernet cable and HDMI to the LCD TV. I had this noise before with a connected SCART plug, which disappeared as soon as I switched to HDMI cable. It worked fine for a while, but the background noise has returned. I changed the HDMI port, but it's still the same.
I hope to find a solution; maybe the interference noise can be eliminated with a filter, I'm not too sure. If someone knows about this... maybe, good luck to all.

I just tried the trick with the remotes (volume all the way up on the Free) and it works.....great at first. After all, with habit, it won't be a hassle to always adjust the volume with the TV remote.
That said, the solution of using an HDMI cable instead of the SCART cord seems interesting, as I have indeed noticed that the interference appeared when connecting the SCART to the TV.
I assume that a suitable cable for the Freebox can be easily found......??

I too have the same sound problem and it's becoming unbearable. With one exception: I don't have a box, the issue started when I installed my digital TV adapter (thank you all-digital...). I read on another site that Wi-Fi could create visual and sound interference, but I'm connected to my university residence network, so there's no box... I'm going to try to mess with the sound using my two remotes in hopes that it works!

I solved the issue of background noise on a Samsung UE32C4000P (more intense when there’s white on the screen or more brightness) by simply replacing the basic SCART plug with a high-quality one.
As with all wiring or headsets provided by the manufacturer, it’s often not great.
As a piece of advice
get a multi-SCART switchbox with selection buttons for each input (I’m not sure of the exact term)
Choose a simple box without an integrated male SCART cable (no restrictions on cable length and if the cable oxidizes, you just need to replace the cable and not the whole box).
Example: box 28 euros + SCART cable 15 euros

One last thing I learned is that gold-plated SCARTs transmit the signal better but can oxidize over time.

For those who have a TV without HDMI, you get the same positive result by connecting the audio input/output of the TV to the audio input/output of the decoder via an RCA cable (one red plug and one white plug for right and left). Of course, for the image, the SCART plug is essential.

You also need to be careful to set the volume of the Freebox quite high and the volume of the TV low.
If you do the opposite, you will hear crackling sounds, which is due to the TV amplifying a sound signal (that of the Freebox) that is weak to begin with.

I connected the HDMI, then changed the TV source to HDMI. (the scart cable is still connected, by the way). It changes everything. Image and sound are much clearer. No more black screen every 30 seconds, no more humming. The problem seems to be a connection issue with the scart or the scart cable. I'm good to buy a new HDMI cable to replace the one I took from the DVD player. By the way, I have a Freebox V5.
