Thumbs.db on Mac

Hello,
I had a PC before I got a Mac. I put my photos on an external hard drive.
When I want to view them on my Mac, some files are readable, and for some, I can no longer view them; there is just a thumbs.db file inside, and I can't open it.

Can you help me?

Thank you very much.

Additionally, I have another problem with my Canon digital camera. The videos show up on my Mac as "photo" files, and so I can't view the video. What should I do?

Thank you so much for your help.

Hello,

I need to be able to open this file, because where have my photos gone otherwise? How can I recover them? They have disappeared, and all I have left is this "thumbs.db", but my photos are no longer there. Please help me, all my memories will disappear otherwise.

Thank you very much.

Hello,
The thumbs.db files are "thumbnails" of actual photos. These thumbnails also contain information specific to the photo itself. On Mac, these "thumbs" are primarily created by iPhoto.
In older versions of iPhoto, up until version 5, iPhoto would copy all photos into its library during import, which meant that users ended up with duplicate photos on their hard drive, especially if they already had those photos on their HD. When importing photos directly from a digital camera, the photos were added to the library - which should never be tampered with. So if one wanted to work on the photo outside of iPhoto, it caused quite a few issues. Especially since the structure of the iPhoto library is quite complex. Apple justified this by the need to be able to revert to the original at any time, which was always stored in an "Originals" folder.
Starting from version 6 of iPhoto, the software no longer copies photos into its library; it simply links to the originals, except when one makes edits within iPhoto, or from an external editor, but always under the control of iPhoto. In this case, a copy of the original is included in iPhoto's "Library"; this is always to allow reverting to the original at any time.
So, based on what you describe, at first glance, since you don't provide any details, we can assume
-that you are working with iPhoto, and that this version of iPhoto is > version 5
-that you had your photos on an external medium,
-that you have edited some of them, but not all
-and that this external medium is no longer visible by iPhoto.
-This would explain why you find some photos (those that were edited and for which the original was copied into the iPhoto library)
-and for the other photos, you only have the "thumbs"

All of this is just deduction based on your indications... but I hope it puts you on the right track.

For your information, the iPhoto library is located here; Hard_Drive / Users / Username / Images / iPhotoLibrary.
You should never rename, move, or do anything to the files inside this folder unless you know exactly what you are doing and the normal consequences that will arise from it.

Best regards

You don't need to open thumbs.db; it's a file that your computer uses for photos.

Ok, I have a Mac. To open it, you need the software called Disk Image Mounter. If that doesn't work, you should change your computer and get a more recent one.
