LINKS to files in WORD

Hello,
I apologize for not fully responding to the advice given regarding my first request last week.
I am coming back to you after struggling for several hours with my very modest Word file (5MB because some photos are already embedded) with numerous links to import jpg photos from the same directory.
On this subject, I can't find the commands that allow me to define whether the link is relative (in the same directory) or absolute (full address, F:..."directory", etc.).
Nevertheless, if I transfer this file to another directory, the photos (which I have reduced in size) no longer display and leave an empty box: "check that the link..." so these are relative links. I also can't find any command that would allow me to temporarily deactivate the links and manually activate them globally.
The original complete file, even without the operational links, after opening 3 or 4 pages or after about ten seconds, starts to grind (20% of the processor) for several minutes making any command inactive, then displays the current page, but starts again with the first command using the mouse or keyboard, as if it were going back in a loop searching for the links. I managed to split it by cutting and pasting as soon as it opens (while selecting it does not grind) and I found that the phenomenon persists on the partial files that have the most links, and we can work without interruption on those that only have about ten links. I was therefore able to export 80% of my work to PDF (with the photos) (exporting the original file works if you are quick enough to command it before the grinding!) But then comes the problem of reassembling the pieces in Word and PDF, which is a lesser evil but not ideal. Whereas a year ago on the same PC the problem did not exist (final size of the PDF back then was 50MB).
Could this be due to my PC configuration (8GB of RAM)? Word Office 365 (updated)? My hard drives (C: 22GB free out of 300, F: 77GB free out of 200), but I have exactly the same problem on my old PC which has more free memory. Could I have added a corrupted photo (Bit Defender detects nothing), but then only a split file would be concerned;
Thank you for your attention.

Hello
Regarding the links: they are relative by default. The easiest way is to place the linked files in the same folder or subfolder.
However, note that as long as the file has not been saved at least once, the links are absolute. This is normal since there is no defined location.
Your problem does not come from your configuration but, in my opinion, it indeed comes from the links. It seems to me that there is some corruption.
Personally, I also deal with large files. I always split them into pieces and then reassemble them using the Master Document feature. Then I create a PDF. For example, I have a 600-page book made up of 15 files, which contain a lot of images. The final doc is very light because it consists only of links, and the converted PDF file is 18 MB.
My images are very light because they are only screenshots.
If it can help you, here is a macro that automatically updates the links when Word cannot find them. It’s an old macro that I haven't tested recently, but you can test it on a saved file just in case you don’t lose anything.

Also see here:
I also have this macro that allows creating a document with linked images. The macro allows showing or not the images, just to focus on the text and go faster.

Thank you for your attention
I am not familiar with this "master document" feature. Until now, I have been "copy-pasting" the selected text from each fragment into a new document. Would it be possible to simply import it using the file name?
Best regards

Thank you, T
You taught me a feature I didn't know about.
This allows me to assemble my fragments but only partially solves the problem because gradually the final document with the photos becomes too heavy. So I tried with only the text documents (with links), but once in the final document saved in the directory where the links lead, when opened the links no longer work. I indeed get the desired assembly, but without the photos. The solution is to save the assembly in the text file directory, then paste it into the directory with the photos, and there’s the miracle, the links open! Now I just need to see if I can manage to initiate the PDF export.
