Hello,

I recently switched from Firefox (FF) to Vivaldi (VV). The browser and browsing are great; however, I'm unable to import my data from FF to VV.

I have followed the procedure indicated by VV, which is outlined here:

http://www.image-heberg.fr/files/1738174325922530174.png

But nothing happens, and my bookmarks are not transferring!!! I've at least tried 10, 20 times and still nothing! However, I have successfully imported an HTML file!

Thank you for your help.

    This procedure below didn't work?

    Launch Firefox
    In the menu bar, click on --> Bookmarks
    Organize Bookmarks
    Import and Backup
    Export Bookmarks to HTML format....
    This results in --> bookmarks.html
    Select Desktop or Downloads
    Save.

    Launch Vivaldi
    Import
    Click on --> Choose File
    Go to Desktop or Downloads
    Select the file you saved --> bookmarks.html

    Hello,

    Do you have other options on the list?

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Launch Firefox
    In the menu bar, click on --> Bookmarks
    Organize bookmarks
    Import and Backup
    Export bookmarks as HTML....
    It saves as --> bookmarks.html
    Select Desktop or Downloads
    Save.

    Launch Vivaldi
    Imports
    Click on --> Choose File
    Go to Desktop or Downloads
    Select the file you saved --> bookmarks.html

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    For passwords, etc...
    Check out this tutorial --> Import and export browser data

    Strange because nothing works for bookmarks or passwords!

    And I don't have the option to choose the browser from which to import the data!

    I'd like to clarify that I’m running on Linux/Kubuntu 24.04 LTS.

    OK,

    Let's start with the export:
    Did you manage to export the bookmarks from Firefox in HTML format (bookmarks.html) and place it on the desktop or in Downloads?

    Example image of the file on the desktop:

    Now, open Vivaldi
    File
    Import ....
    Click on --> Choose a file
    Go to the Desktop
    Select the file you saved --> bookmarks.html
    and see what it gives

    It's done...and it does absolutely nothing. No bookmarks are transferred!

    Sorry, I don't have Vivaldi and I don't have any other suggestion than the tutorial below:

      Hello,

      Between its pesky "Speed Dial", its various default "extensions" and "essential" bookmarks like Shein, I'm not too keen on this breed, but that's not the issue. I've played the guinea pig, I like it, and successfully.

      Regarding the bookmarks, I'm not sure if it matters, but mine are configured in Firefox to native html via:

      about:config

      then:

      browser.bookmarks.autoExportHTML to True.

      Once Vivaldi is open and the ad tab is closed, the Speed Dial remains:

      I'm going to click on Bookmarks at the top, then Import

      Firefox is directly offered to me, I don't have another browser, I assume that in the opposite case, it's necessary to choose. I leave everything checked and obey, start the import.

      The bookmarks are indeed present as Imported from Firefox, except that the number returned is inaccurate (they are all present, but I suppose Vivaldi considers each of my folders as a single unit). The passwords are also there, which I can verify from the little arrow at the top left, under Security and privacy, passwords.

        But it's possible that the bug is with Vivaldi for Linux and that Vivaldi is only looking for the browser in its default Windows location, and obviously can't find it.

        If the above doesn't work, I'll take a moment to be a guinea pig again, this time on my Linux Mint virtual machine, but it's not going to be easy because I'm not even sure I have any Firefox bookmarks and passwords there.

        As for the sport, it's about transferring my Firefox bookmarks from Windows to my Mint virtual machine and even more about installing Vivaldi, which is not available by default in the repositories; you really have to want it.

        https://www.linuxtricks.fr/wiki/ubuntu-mint-installer-vivaldi

        After which, the same procedure as for Windows leads to the same successful result, and where Firefox and its path are well recognized.

    Well, it's still not working!

    Too bad! In any case, I notice that in the Snap version of Vivaldi on Kubuntu 243.04 LTS, in the options to import bookmarks, I have no browser options offered to me like
    Firefox, as you (Brucine) show in your latest screenshot!

    Thank you

      The situation has no reason to depend on the operating system, and anyway, in my case, Linux Mint is also built on Ubuntu.

      The only remaining hypothesis is a particular installation of Firefox via Snap or the same for Vivaldi instead of using a standard package like in my link in <17>.

    It’s done, everything works; I have my tabs, my passwords, and my Firefox bookmarks on Vivaldi :-) :-)

    The problem was solved quite simply! I switched from Vivaldi in snap to Vivaldi in flatpak. (Two different application packaging systems on Linux)! With Vivaldi in flatpak, everything works very well.

      Yes, that's what I was thinking as mentioned in <19> because it works perfectly at my place.
