Slow connection

Hello everyone,

I find that my internet connection is getting slower and slower; much more than it was 3 or 4 years ago.

My computer is old, > 12 years, and my box is probably even older. But that doesn’t change the fact that downloads used to be much faster.

I’ve done 3 tests, here are the results.

QueChoisir Speed-Test shows me => Download: 87.56 Mb/s

Ookla              ==>   Download   =>   79.80 Mbps     

                    ==>   Upload   =>   60.32 Mbps

Free              ==>   Download   =>   97.8 Mb/s

Thank you for letting me know if the results are really bad, or acceptable. And, possibly what I could do to improve the situation, except for changing my machine, because I know that, but in the meantime it’s annoying.

    Hello,

    Your measurements make no sense if you don't specify how you're connected, both to your box and how that box connects to the internet.

    But anyway, you already have very high speed which is more than sufficient for most uses (very high speed in its French definition is above 30 Mbit/s).


    And there you go ....

    But misery, how annoying the line spacing is!!

    Thank you for looking at my question and answering it.

    To respond to yours, I am connected to the Orange network via fiber optic (I am in Paris), and my box is connected to the computer via wifi.

      OK,

      first see about connecting to the box via Ethernet, it will be much faster.

      Otherwise, your Wi-Fi card, which is probably old, is certainly not on par with current Wi-Fi 6 cards that allow for 400/500 Mbit/s, whereas Ethernet is practically 1000, but you might only have a 400 or 500 Mbit/s subscription on your Orange box

        Besides the fact that outside of specific contexts a connection over 60 Mbps cannot be classified as slow, I have a fiber subscription deliberately at 500 Mbps supposedly "boosted" to 1000, which seems to be the case today (ethernet tests bring me back 937-773), but there have been times when it was capped at 500 and only returned between 150 and 350 depending on the day's mood and without me noticing it except by chance, having observed no slowdown (unless, probably, which is not the case, I was downloading files of several GB every day).

        It's true that 60 Mbit/s is still fast; not so long ago (less than 2 years), like many, I had less than 10 at home, and less than 1 on the upload, I had more on my mobile connection :-)

        However, ADSL upload is really no longer suitable for our time where we store a lot in the cloud.

    Hello,

    "the uploads were happening much faster." How do you measure that?

    What type of disk do you have in your computer?

      An old computer often becomes slower and slower:

      • new software that demands more processing power and memory
      • processor sometimes slowed down by lack of ventilation
      • slow disk due to fragmentation or errors

    Hello,

    While Wi-Fi is convenient, it's not really great technology; the speed is often lower than what's promised by the Provider, due to the fact that it's a wave and it can bounce or be easily blocked by a wall, a piece of furniture, other waves, interferences, etc.

    Often, if you use Ethernet, the good old direct connection cable to your computer, your speed is multiplied by 3.

    The Wi-Fi card may be throttled or poorly configured; check its settings; right-click on the Wi-Fi card, properties, configure, advanced:

    • Roaming aggressiveness (max 5);
    • Preferred band (choose yours; if you can have 5GHz, then go for it);
    • Bluetooth (disable; some recommend this to avoid interferences, but others say it makes no difference);
    • Ad hoc channel (choose your channel, but you’ll need to change it in the Box; it’s stated that if everyone in your building has the same channel, it interferes, so choose a channel that's not used by other residents);
    • Channel width (automatic);
    • Wireless mode (choose the highest value: usually 6);
    • Transmission power (max)


    In Windows, in search: gpedit.msc
    In computer configuration (on the left), Administrative templates -> Network -> QoS Packet Scheduler: on the right, "Limit reservable bandwidth" will appear; double-click on it, check the "Enabled" box and specify 0% in Bandwidth limit.

    I don't use Wi-Fi for security reasons; the few times I've had to use it, the settings mentioned above have doubled the speed.

    Try using a small software to update all your drivers, Iobit Driver Booster; it does everything by itself with one click, you can uninstall it after using it.

      There are many approximations in this speech: the first is that no FTTH ISP (for the general public) sells a bandwidth contract, only access and indicative bandwidth; guaranteed speeds exist for professional services, and even then they guarantee speeds well below the capacity of the connection, for example 100 Mbps on a physical 1 Gbps connection and for 20 times more money.

      As for Ethernet which multiplies by 3... let's say it provides the normal speed of fiber, it's Wi-Fi that divides it by 2, 3... 20. That will change with Wi-Fi 7, but it is still not very widespread and therefore very expensive as well.

        You're being really heavy-handed with your rights here,

        or don't you understand what "up to" means?

        It must be the most repeated word in this pricing sheet, even more than the number of TV channels.

        For me, it means that it might be less, but it's true that it's a vocabulary that dates back to copper networks and that "up to" is much closer to the truth today than it was before on copper lines.
