Hello, I bought a Crucial P3 NVMe M.2 SSD to boost my old laptop. Unfortunately, I can't get it to be detected by the laptop. It works fine on my newer desktop.

On my old laptop, I see a sticker that says "support SATA SSD only". I guess I got the wrong standard for the SSD? Should I have gotten a SATA SSD? However, I only have 1 notch on the slot, while a SATA SSD has 2. Is that normal?

    Hi debleu

Are you sure that your old laptop recognizes NVMe M.2 ?? > the one you have <

It would be mounted in a USB enclosure

    @+

Reference and model of the laptop ??

      NVMe™ PCIe 3.0 Technology

= the one you bought => it's normal that it has only one notch

No, precisely, I believe it doesn't recognize NVMe m2. Only SATA m2, but I only have the M connector on my PC. However, SATA m2 SSDs are only sold with B and M connectors. Does that pose a problem?

If I buy a SATA m2 SSD like this one https://www.ldlc.com/fiche/PB00503715.html and put it in an M connector, will it work?

It's an Asus GL742VW. The documentation states that we can use NVMe and SATA. But the sticker says only SATA...

    Hello

It is possible that there is a second M.2 port on the motherboard, you need to check, maybe the second one is NVMe.

Because the GL742VW is a version that has many sub-versions, it's hard to draw conclusions with just the reference, but if a sticker specifies compatibility only with SATA..... it's unlikely to be a mistake.

In the BIOS, I only have the AHCI option... So what about SATA? Could the reference of the SATA M.2 SSD I posted previously be compatible with my PC?

It's always complicated to comment on the compatibility of hardware, but yes, it's a branded SSD, in SATA, which seems to be necessary in your case, so yes, there's every chance it will work.

      Hello,

Here are the spare parts references for an Asus GL742VW. It appears that the laptop supports both SATA and NVMe SSDs.

Well, that was it, the PC didn't support NVMe. I bought an M.2 SATA SSD instead, and it works perfectly. Thanks everyone for your help, issue resolved.
