Hello everyone,

For the past few days, I've been having an annoying bug with my HP wired keyboard.

It looks like this

I specifically chose it for its built-in numeric keypad... Except that for some time now, 1 time out of 2, it presses "Num Lock" at the same time, even though there is no "Num Lock" key on my keyboard...

How do I know?

1) because of the bug
2) by testing my keyboard via this link: https://www.onlinemictest.com/fr/keyboard-test/

I've done CTRL+Windows+O, I've uninstalled my drivers, reinstalled, changed the language of my keyboard, etc.

Nothing works...
I'm out of ideas...

Probably a Windows update that messed up my keyboard.

Thank you for shedding some light on this!

Hello,

Have you tested with another keyboard?

I wonder if the num lock isn't above the 7 key?

You can also see if the numbers work well with the Windows on-screen keyboard => options => enable num pad.

Best regards

Yes, I had already done this manipulation and it didn't work... CTRL+Windows+O = opening the virtual keyboard, I noted it in my first post.

There's no NUM LOCK key on my keyboard...

Plus, I posted a photo of the model...

Since last night, my keyboard is working normally again, I don't even understand why... But at least it's working well.

I didn't know this shortcut, so it was impossible to know that you had already done this. Next time, it would be wiser to directly indicate the program used.

Considering the quality of the photo, we can't see what is above the 7 symbol on your keyboard, so it was possible that it was a num lock.

At least the issue is resolved.

I just want to add that there is a troubleshooting utility if this happens again.

Oblixx...
I'm 33 years old and I work in IT...
Of course I've tried the troubleshooter, but it doesn't work!

And for the photo, just click on it, it's of good enough quality to see the symbol 7... It's just that the forum never displays images at 100% if they're too large.

I have this same problem again...
Instead of waiting for it to work again, I advise against buying HP, it's CR*P
Plus, there's no way to find a driver, they do nothing (even those hosted on other sites)

Other keyboards work, but I use them for my other PCs.
I'm going to get a Logitech instead of waiting for this to work again. Here I'm using the numbers that use the CAP LOCK key, it's not convenient...

Hello,

I always use an external wired keyboard (No Name: it's cheaper and doesn't install a driver, just using the default Microsoft driver, it has a numeric keypad and a Num Lock key).

The integrated keyboard on the laptop is HP since the PC is and has a numeric keypad and a Num Lock key).

It annoys me, for example, to have to do key combinations to enter the login password, so I modified the registry to have Num Lock on by default, and I'm having a hard time understanding the nature of the problem: my numeric keypad has a dual function, which leads to looking for the arrow keys elsewhere, but this doesn't seem to be the case for yours. What would be the downside if, as I understand it, the Num Lock was activated (or not)?

That said, there's no magic, it's not clear how physically pressing a numeric key on a keyboard that lacks it could force a Num Lock.

However, it is possible that the driver is not just a driver but includes a "utility" or "software" that manages this function; see for example here (where there is a physical Num Lock key, but that's beside the point).

It may also be possible, I haven’t thought about it, to force the PC to use the generic driver instead of the specific driver, as can be done for screens.

Hello Brucine,

I already did this manipulation to activate the numeric keypad, but whether it's checked or not, it doesn't change anything... (once again, the shortcut is CTRL+Windows+O, then I click on options and I have the same display as in the link you sent me)

This time, I know how the problem occurred:
To summarize, I have interference with my speakers, I can hear my HDD working if the speaker cables touch the power cable (I suppose) (even though these cables are new), so I tidied things up and unplugged the USB from my (wired) keyboard to untangle everything and then I plugged it back in, needless to say it took me 15 seconds...

Positive point, no more noise interference from my speakers....

I don't see how unplugging and plugging back into the same USB port makes my keyboard bug...

I even uninstalled the drivers, removed the keyboard, restarted the computer, and then only plugged the keyboard back in, and unfortunately I still have that infamous bug.

For the "prestidigitation" problem, don’t ask me how or why, but what I notice is that the bug works like this: any key on the numeric keypad (from 0 to 9) serves both as a number and as NUM Lock (even though I don't have a NUM Lock key), hence the bug...

Where there should be a NUM Lock key, I have a copy key... I obviously tried various combinations with this key but it only copies...

I will do some research but how to force the PC to use the generic driver?
HP also has a diagnostic utility and I have an error message indicating that it only works with HP hardware... (What a piece of junk this brand is, I had the same problem the first time)

The model of my keyboard is HP: SK2028 (Azerty, because it also exists in Qwerty)

I still don't follow you, what is the problem with this numeric keypad since the keys are not double-function?

Some software (games but not only) can also remap the keyboard, see if that might be the case.

Regarding the driver, that seems far-fetched since it will reinstall automatically; we could possibly try going through Devices and Printers, USB Keyboard, Hardware, the driver in question, properties, drivers, disable, but this also means that we need to remove the corresponding inf and possibly sys files (the latter if there is a service, in System32-Drivers, the former in Windows-Inf): in the absence of a dedicated driver, the system will have no choice but to use the generic driver if the keyboard works with it.

Well, the annoying thing is that as long as I have this bug, I can't use my numeric keypad... And it's really frustrating to use the numbers above the QWERTY.

My keypad randomly inputs the numeric keys and the arrow keys; for example, the 4 does a line indent to the left, the 6 to the right, the 8 upward, and the 2 downward.
The diagonal numbers, well, they sometimes function diagonally.
And the 5 doesn't do anything half the time.

When I say "half the time," I haven't taken the time to collect statistics; it's rather random and very frequent... When I use the numeric keypad, it only visually registers the Caps Lock key. Really strange.

And I don't have any malware or viruses...

I don't play games on PC. It's been about 4 years since I last launched a game; I even uninstalled them...

I do a lot of video editing, and the touchpad helps me move quickly when I want to go to the x-th minute and second of a video. Or to a specific frame.

But even typing an email is becoming tiring...

Anyway, I think I'll change my keyboard; it will be simpler... Fortunately, the mouse that goes with it is still working fine.

Ah, I didn't understand that the numeric keypad actually had a double function despite the apparent absence on the keys and that it was locked off.

Try modifying the registry to enable it automatically at startup:

If the numeric keypad is indeed bi-functional, there is either a dedicated key on the keyboard (lock icon?) or a key combination that allows access to NumLock, which varies according to the brand of the PC, and it may have been accidentally activated in the opposite direction if the problem is intermittent.

Generally, it's the function key Fn+something (7, 8, 11, insert key...)

So I did change the setting by putting the value at 2...
Still the same problem.

No, the keyboard is NOT dual-function.

Let me explain again:
I'm going to run the test and see what happens... I'm going to press the 4 key on the numeric pad 10 times, here are the results:
backspace
4
backspace
4
backspace
4
backspace
4
backspace
4

I never realized it before, but it works well once in a while.
Same for any key on the numeric keypad.

I'm going to change the keyboard, it'll be easier.

I suppose you restarted after modifying the settings.

In these circumstances, the keyboard is probably defective.

As I mentioned elsewhere, I always go for No Name brands at supermarkets or Boulanger or equivalents.

Not the cheapest because you get what you pay for (the letters wore off quite quickly on my previous keyboard), but for €15-20, I can't remember exactly, I've got one with a numeric keypad and Num Lock key.

Even if it only lasts say 2 years, the budget isn't considerable, and it hurts less to invest in a "no-name" keyboard that may fail in the same way for less money than a "branded" one.

I'm more of a brand keyboard person because I want the sound of silence when typing, in addition to certain functions, and on average my keyboards last between 6 to 9 years, so it's alright :-)

I got into a fight with "the brand" the last time I had one after dropping an object on it; losses and gains, it's true that the keyboard itself wasn't to blame and that, indeed, aside from more or less questionable gadgets, high-end keyboards often have keys with sound dampeners, even if most people today drown out the sound of typing under the noise of the content they're browsing online.

If you break them by hitting them, it's not the same :-))
Uh no, I like calmness :-)

Thanks anyway for trying to help me.
Yes, yes, I did restart the PC :-)

Still strange this bug.

It cost me around thirty euros; I never spend too much, I don't do competitive typing or hardcore gaming, and I don't need a keyboard that lights up like a Christmas tree ^^

Next time, I'll get one with a NUM Lock key... ^^'

It is argued here that the problem may be due to the activation of mouse keys in the keyboard accessibility options in the control panel.

Hello,

Yes, I've seen it already, I changed those settings too but it doesn't change anything...
