Canon printer scanner not working after migration

Hello,

After successfully migrating from Sierra to Ventura, I can print but the scanner doesn't work like it did before.

My configuration = MacOs Sonoma 14.0 (installed last night), 3.6 GHz Intel Core i3 quad-core processor, Radeon Pro 555X 2 GB, with 8 GB of 2400 MHz DDR4 memory.

I went to the Canon website to download the software, but the Setup exe doesn't work, nor does Preview, only Image Transfer opens but the following error code keeps appearing: "Failed to open a connection to the device (-21345)."

Thank you for your help.

Good evening,

You say:

"After successfully migrating from Sierra to Ventura, I can print but the scanner no longer works like before."

"My config = MacOs Sonoma 14.0 (installed last night)"

So, you have finally moved from Sierra to Sonoma... is that correct?

And which exact model of Mac are you using, model and especially production date?

Provide all the information indicated in the Apple menu / About This Mac...

Best regards.

Hello Francis_23

That's right. I upgraded from Sierra to Ventura and then Sonoma without any issues with a recently purchased second-hand iMac.

However, I'm facing the problem of the scanner not working while the printer works perfectly with this new second-hand device.

It's an iMac 19,2 - Intel Core i3 quad-core - 3.6 GHz - 8 GB of memory

Is this enough data?

Thank you in advance for your response.

Have a nice day!

Hello,

"After successfully migrating from Sierra to Ventura, I can print but the scanner is not working as it did before."

"It's an iMac 19,2 - Intel Core i3 quad-core - 3.6 GHz - 8 GB of memory"

OK - So you were talking about 2 different Macs at first, since a Mac running Sierra cannot upgrade to Ventura... and the model you just mentioned originally shipped with Mojave.

"I went to the Canon website to download the software but the Setup exe does not work"

And indeed, a scanning driver with the .exe suffix can only work on Windows.

You need to download the driver intended for macOS.

https://www.canon.fr/support/

Printing works because the latest versions of macOS no longer require a driver to print to a compatible printer.

I don't know the exact model of the printer-scanner you have,

but "Image Capture" should be able to initiate a scan.

If there is a problem, it can sometimes be resolved by restarting the Mac in "safe mode," followed by a normal startup.

https://support.apple.com/fr-fr/guide/mac-help/mh21245/mac#:~:text=Start%20up%20an%20Apple%20Silicon%20Mac%20in%20safe%20mode&text=A%20Mac%20is%20completely%20shut%20down%2C%20the%20words%20"Starting%20in%20Safe%20Mode"%20appear.

The same goes for the printer scanner: sometimes simply turning it off, then unplugging it for a few minutes is enough to resolve issues.

You can also try installing Canon's "Quick Menu" to quickly access your printer's functions.

https://www.canon.fr/support/consumer_products/software/quick-menu.html?softwareid=tcm%3A79-1330825&os=all

Finally, if the printer is too old, the solution is sometimes found by using VueScan.

Hello Francis_2023,

Yes, indeed I did a migration: from my old Mac Sierra to a second-hand Mac bought with Ventura 13, and then I upgraded to Sonoma 14.

With Ventura, the printer worked well and still does, but the scanner doesn't work anymore. Even Preview doesn't work. The Image Capture app appears, but it's unable to transfer anything like the scanner.

On Canon's website, we can no longer find the software for my Canon Pixma MG 5300 series printer. So I followed your advice and downloaded Vuescan: it scans but it's paid, while I'm looking for something free.

I tried turning off the printer and the scanner, but NOTHING works! Also, I'm unable to transfer my photos from my iPhone 14 to my Mac since this migration 72 hours ago (3 days)...

Thank you for all this advice, Francis, and to the others if possible, please do something.

Hello,

Why not go back by reinstalling macOS Ventura, which apparently suited you very well.

I'm telling you this because every major new version of macOS (e.g., version 13.0.x or 14.0.x) contains major bugs, and it's better to wait for the updates that follow a few weeks/months later (like 14.1 or even 14.2) before installing the new macOS on your Mac. Indeed, these versions contain a lot of bug fixes reported by Mac users.

It is important to understand that the Apple engineers who develop and test the new macOS have not necessarily anticipated all scenarios: there are so many models of Macs, processor models, graphics cards, older versions of macOS, etc., that the combination of all this generates hundreds or even thousands of migration cases to the new macOS.
So, when Apple releases a new macOS, they rely on users to find problems so they can correct them in the following update.

Moreover, manufacturers of printers, scanners, and other peripherals haven't had much time to update the drivers for their vast variety of products.
Therefore, very often, peripherals no longer work, and you have to wait for the driver update, assuming the manufacturer decides it's worth it...

That's why migrating to a major version of macOS requires careful consideration:

- Are the essential applications for my daily life compatible with the new macOS, and if so, will I have to pay for them or is it free?

- Same question for peripherals (printer, scanner, ...)
