Graphics card driver for Windows 2000 virtualization

Hello,

My setup is Windows 10 with a Radéon RX580 video card.

I created a virtual machine with VM Ware Workstation on which I installed Windows 2000 Pro. It works, but in 16 colors because I don't have a video driver.

Is there a solution?

    Hello, the problem is that the video card was released long after the death of Windows 2000, so AMD does not provide a driver compatible with Win2000.

      In my opinion, there is no solution. You will have to stick with the 16 existing colors.

    I tried, but I get a message saying that Windows 2000 is not compatible. Unless I'm doing something wrong?

      When you did the installation, did you correctly choose a Windows 2000 type machine from the start, before installing the OS?

      You should check in the VMware directories to see if you have the file.

      Windows 2000

      		10.0.0 through 10.0.12 winPreVista.iso

      This iso file needs to be mounted on the VMware CD and in the VM, the installation should be done from the CD.

    I am in the process of reinstalling Win200 from an original CD because I got a blue screen.

    So I have to start everything over, but I don't have an ISO, I have a Windows CD.

    The ISO I'm talking about is the VMware Tools ISO, which is installed once the OS is installed.

    I imagine that if the VM is set up by specifying W2000 as the VM type before installing the OS, the VMware Tools installation procedure will choose the correct tools ISO.

    But if that's not the case for me, the file winPreVista.iso is located in C:\Program Files (x86)\VMware\VMware Workstation.

    So once W2000 is installed, mount this ISO in the CD and install VMware Tools from the CD in the VM.

    Sorry for leaving you hanging.

    I installed Windows 2000 SP4 from my CD, but it's missing the updates from Windows Update, including one that is a security update, which is why the VMWare Tools won't install.

    I have the update KB835732; now I just need to transfer it from my real machine to the virtual machine.

    I will come back to this post to let you know if it worked.

      Hello,

      I didn't play the guinea pig by installing a Windows 2000 virtual machine.

      The solution, as jee pee says, involves VMWare Tools, but the documentation states that only older versions support Windows 2000, meaning you'll have to install this specific version manually (rather than, as in ordinary situations, doing it when the virtual machine prompts you after installation).

    Hello everyone,

    As promised last night, I'm here to wrap up the post.

    It works!

    It is indeed the latest version of VM Ware Workstation 17.

    I was installing Windows 2000 SP4 using the original CD, but this CD was missing an important security update ---> KB835732

    I downloaded it from Microsoft, then transferred it to my virtual machine and installed it.

    Little tip :

    Windows 2000 did not recognize USB3.

    You need to plug the USB key into a USB2 port even if it's a USB3 key.

    Otherwise, it will not be recognized.

    So I installed the security update and then the VMWare Tools

    Player ---> Manage ---> Install VMWare Tools

    Once that was done, I was able to set my display to "true color 1024x768"

    I could have chosen any resolution.

    That's it
