Signs that a graphics card is dead?

Hello, Good evening,

I have been working on my main PC for 3 days.

I recently bought a used graphics card, and I’m starting to regret it, but I’m not sure if it’s dead, or just not yet supported by my motherboard’s BIOS.

It’s an ASUS ROG Strix GeForce RTX 3080 Ti OC Edition 12 GB GDDR6X

I have an EVGA SuperNova 1300 G2 power supply
A Gigabyte Z490 UD AC motherboard with the latest BIOS currently F22
With an Intel I9 11900K that I just replaced at the same time as the graphics card
An ASUS VP28UQG 28' Ultra HD 4K LED display

For the 3080 TI, the fans spin, the RGB works, when I unplugged the power supply from the tower and then unplugged the PCI-E power connectors, the diodes lit up next to the connectors while there was still power to indicate that the cables were disconnected, so it’s not 100% dead, but there’s no Display Port signal, neither for the BIOS nor at Windows startup.

I’m starting to despair after working so hard to get it into a case that it didn’t fit by default, an Antec Twelve Hundred (I had to saw part of a hard drive rack, and make a wooden support to bear the weight of the card), I’m not sure if all this effort is in vain.

I went from the Intel CPU graphics chip in Settings, Mainboard of the BIOS to change the PCI to Gen3 mode

I put my old GTX 780 back and it works very well.

The RTX 3080 TI displayed nothing in either PCI Gen 4 or Gen 3

Another detail, the motherboard shows no problems by its LEDs, they are all off.

The 3080 TI is still under warranty (3 years) I have the PDF digital invoice from 2 years ago, but I've been asking myself too many questions since today.

Everything should work it seems but...

If you have any ideas, thank you for shedding some light if you can.

Thank you in advance.

Hello

Let's hope this is temporary and that you'll get it working. Good luck.

no Display Port signal

I was thinking, why not try an HDMI just to see

The GPU is indeed in the pcie x16 slot, the one at the top closest to the processor? They say it's better, or to avoid cutting the chassis less you put it in the lower pcie x4 slot?

hi

a PCIe x16 graphics card cannot be installed in a PCIe x4 slot

(unless you're divine)

bye!

.

hi fabul

an old graphics card will simply operate at the speed of its original slot (if it isn't dead, of course)

bye!)

"a PCIe x16 graphics card cannot be installed on a PCIe x4 port"

But it can. A PCIe 16X GPU works fine on a PCIe 4X, only the throughput will be divided by 4 if it's the same generation. PCIe 4X ports are generally PCIe 16X ports with only 4 PCIe lanes wired.

Hello fabul,

Have you tried the other PCI Express 16 slot on your motherboard?

Otherwise, every time I've had surprises with graphics cards on the first install, it was because I didn't push it in enough; sometimes you really have to force it quite hard, and even now I always stay cautious about this specific point.

Hello everyone,

Thank you for your replies.

I switched to Gen3 following some reddit comments on a topic titled:
Gigabyte Z490 UD unable to run Intel I9 11900k

https://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/comments/qce6w3/gigabyte_z490_ud_unable_to_run_intel_i9_11900k/?rdt=50055

My Z490 UD AC is almost identical except I have the WiFi integrated.

I also tried HDMI, same result.

One thing that's bothering me is that the cable doesn't click in fully due to the case, I might need to cut it because it comes too close.

I think I should start by cutting the case so the cable can fit in all the way.

I tried HDMI as well and got the same result.

It would be annoying for me to have to install it in the bottom slot, because firstly, it's less sturdy (the top one has a metal frame around it), also I have an SSD with a cooling system, and on top of that, it gets in line with another occupied HDD tray, but in principle the top slot should work.

Then I believe I have plugged it in the port correctly each time, pushing harder I might risk breaking something.

If I cut the metal of the case and it doesn't help, I think I'll have no choice but to have the board tested at a computer store.

It's true that testing on another configuration is ideal.

The IT guy called me to tell me that the graphics card is good.

So I asked him to update the BIOS of the graphics card.

Hoping that it will help.

It will be alright by next week.

Thanks and @+

Hello

so that the cable goes all the way in.

Speaking of the cable, it's a second-hand card but what about your cable? I saw that for powerful cards and to get all the bandwidth that it can send, some had to upgrade to a cable from the next generation, for example for a DP1.2 they used a 1.4 cable or for DP1.4 a 2.0 cable. It was really an overclocked card. But they didn't say if that prevented the screen from turning on, on the desktop it shouldn't do much in terms of bandwidth.

Similarly, for incompatible screens, it's the fps that sometimes drop when they use the big card but in game.

And the wooden wedge, you can see in the photo that the card wasn't really quite parallel, not sure if that’s enough to cut contact in the slot. (that slot on your card is reinforced for heavy cards, you can see the small metal frame). Normally the LED should light up, a contact is hardware.

Hello,

The DP cable is the one that came with the screen, which allows me to access DP 1.1 and 1.2 in the menu. I've tried both, no difference,

And yes, the wooden wedge raises the card a bit, maybe a millimeter too much, but barely. I'll sand it down a little anyway.

Thanks.

The graphics card BIOS has been updated, and now it works :)

So resolved.

Thanks to everyone.

Hi

Super happy for you, it was worth thinking about, not very common.

While looking at your response, I notice the photo again and one of the RAM sticks on the gray slot isn't fully locked in, just a matter of one mm, it jumps out at me but sorry for not noticing it the other day. I wasn't looking for the RAM.

It could become unlocked one day if you bump the PC a bit too hard.

Thank you Luc,

Great sense of observation!

Indeed, when I read your message, I immediately shut down my PC to lock it.

This will surely save me some trouble.

Have a good evening.
