Nvidia graphics card not recognized

Hello everyone,

I have a little problem with my new Asus TUF laptop for a few weeks now.

Indeed, it is supposed to have two graphics cards and the Nvidia card is no longer recognized and therefore unusable, which greatly reduces the usability of my gaming PC. Currently, it is visible in the device manager as a hidden device (error code 45) and under the name "Microsoft Basic Display Adapter."

Configuration:

model: ASUS TUF Gaming A17 FA706QM

graphics cards:

  • AMD Ryzen 7 5800H with Radeon Graphics (still working fine)
  • Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060 Laptop GPU (no longer visible)

OS: Windows 11 Home version 22H2

History:

I noticed one day that it was no longer connected for no apparent reason (I hadn't played a game with it for a few days). Nvidia updates would no longer work, it no longer appeared in Asus's Armoury Crate application (which helps manage the system a bit), and it was hidden in the device manager (but under its real name).

I then read the forums to try to resolve my issue and I have:

  • Attempted to reinstall the Nvidia drivers from the official website, but it is not possible because it does not recognize any card present on my PC.
  • Uninstalled all my drivers and re-downloaded the drivers from the Asus manufacturer site; the installation completes but nothing changes. Nvidia applications can no longer be downloaded, however.
  • Uninstalled my Nvidia card in the manager (I was told it might reconnect automatically at startup). From then on, it didn't even appear in the manager anymore.
  • Reinstalled Windows (I won't do this a second time, please; I'm too lazy to re-download all my software), that didn't do anything either.
  • I saw on a site that the issue could come from the eco mode of the GPU in Armoury Crate; I performed the indicated manipulation, and after that, the card reappeared only in the device manager, still hidden and this time under the name "Microsoft Basic Display Adapter."
  • I tried to force the driver choice for the different hidden Nvidia devices (see next photo), it tells me that it works, but after restarting, the card remains under the same name.
Screenshot of the device manager (showing hidden devices)

Before you ask, yes the card is visible in the BIOS and yes it is physically connected (I checked), especially since my PC is 3 months old.

If you have any idea for a solution, that would be really nice, thank you in advance!

    I finally managed to solve the problem, here is the solution in case it happens to someone else: My card was displayed as a basic Microsoft video card. Indeed, I had uninstalled the drivers and they wouldn’t reinstall because the card was not detected (error 45). In fact, this was indeed due to the Armoury Crate application from Asus as I had thought. There is an option in system/power saving of GPU that puts the GPU in eco mode and... simply cuts the power to the second card (yes, it’s really stupid, especially since it activates without warning). However, in my case, the "standard" option was selected. You then need to switch to eco mode and then back to standard (you do this several times until it understands xD, refreshing each time but without restarting). I had already tried this but it hadn't worked. After that, your card reappears in the device manager and you can reinstall the drivers. In my case, the drivers updated automatically because I had already assigned it even though they were removed automatically upon restart. I wonder if that is what allowed this solution to work because I had already tried but without success.

      I confirm, it worked very well on my TUF FA506QR (Ryzen 7 5800H and RTX 3070). Thank you Jeremie for the advice!

    Hello

    The graphics cards in this series of laptops are customized by Asus, so you need to use the drivers published by Asus, not those from Nvidia, as is normally specified in the PC manual (The PC must be plugged into a power source, without exception):

    driver link

    The download page for all drivers:

        So I assume that the PC is still under warranty, so for me, returning it for customer service is the best option.

    Hello,

    Windows + R
    Type --> devmgmt.msc and OK.

    What do you have under display adapters?

    Give the hardware ID number of the --> Microsoft Basic Display Adapter
    Look at this --> Find the device identification number
    Post the number in your next message.

      Hello,

      As I mentioned, I've already tried assigning a driver to it (from the card properties, the same page you showed me in the screenshot). So I have a compatible driver, it detects it. But when I restart, it reverts to the default driver (see images 2 and 3).

      I'm still sending you the number in the attachment (image 1), but I already have a compatible version available.

    If your RTX 3060 is recognized as "Microsoft Basic Video Adapter", it’s a driver issue. You need to reinstall them. Try the nVIDIA website. Make sure you choose the correct model. Procedure: Product Type: Geforce; Product Series: GeForce RTX 30 series (Notebooks); Product Range: GeForce RTX 3060 Laptop GPU; Operating System: Windows 11; Download Type: GRD Driver (Game Ready Driver); Language: French. Then click on Search. Good luck.

      I tried to reinstall it and no, I didn't get the wrong product. I took exactly the one you mentioned in your comment, it seems to me. It just doesn't recognize the card, so it doesn't start the download. But in itself, I downloaded the driver from the ASUS manufacturer's website. But thanks anyway!

    Download and install --> 7Zip 64 bits

    Download this driver --> nVidia

    Right-click on the driver --> 536.40-desktop-.......exe
    Select --> 7Zip
    Choose --> extract to "536.40-desktop-.......\"

    Go to the device manager
    Right-click on the Microsoft basic video card
    Update driver
    Browse my computer for drivers
    Choose from a list of available drivers...
    Have Disk
    Browse
    Go to the folder of the unzipped driver --> 536.40-desktop-......
    Folder --> Display.Driver
    Select the file --> nvamig.inf and OK.
    Restart.

    I just had the same problem.

    Thanks for coming back to post the author's response; indeed, it was also Armoury Crate and the power-saving mode, and I was able to solve the problem. I was close to going into the BIOS like some suggested on other sites.
