Power On or Off
jin -
Quick question (maybe silly), my computer is plugged into a power strip, and I also have the option to turn off the power supply of my PC using a button at the back of my case. The question I'm asking is the following: is it better to turn off the power supply of my PC + the power strip, or just the power supply of my PC, or just the power strip? Or not at all? What do you recommend?

Hello K4brone,
Why do you want to turn it off like that, completely I mean?
Your power strip should be equipped with a switch that serves as a surge protector.
According to a EDF technician, who came for an inspection following a significant fire in the apartment above, precisely because of a power strip.
If you don't have anything else plugged into this power strip, use its On/Off button.
If we're going on vacation, turn off the On/Off button at the back of your PC AND unplug it from the wall as well. In case of a lightning strike, you will be protected, which is not the case if we leave it plugged in, contrary to what people believe.
Best regards!
Hello
Usually, it's best to shut down the computer "normally".
The rest depends on a bunch of things.
If you need to leave the computer in sleep mode because it's scheduled to wake up for an update or something else when you're not working, you can leave everything on.
Otherwise, there is often a surge protector with a switch that allows you to cut off several devices at once, so in that case, it’s simpler to just turn that off.
If you want to eliminate the power consumption of devices in sleep mode.
After that, if you want to consider all the specifics of each device, the best way to avoid all possible problems will surely lead you to find a good reason somewhere to make it less simple.
The power supply's switch is poorly positioned at the back and it's full of wires, and the extension cord you placed it somewhere accessible, right?
As Txiki said, the safest option would be to leave nothing plugged in, but most people do what's quickest. Everyone finds their own balance and tries to stick to it as often as possible.
Some might even tell you for a good reason that a power strip shouldn't be used, so you're left with just the switch on the PC's power supply. But there are thousands of models available in stores and you haven't considered getting one.
It's at least rated for 16 amps, and have you calculated everything that's plugged into it?
If you look closely, the cord between the power supply and the outlet sometimes has 16 amp plugs and 10 amp wire.
Good evening, simply turning off the power strip is not enough! You need to unplug your power strip and keep it as far away from the wall outlet as possible, because lightning can come out of the wall outlet and find the end of the power strip cable to continue its path.
To turn off your computer, use the Start menu. Once it is completely shut down, you can switch off the button at the back of the computer as well as the one on the power strip, unplug it and move it away from the wall outlet. If you don't feel safe, you can also unplug your computer from the power strip and turn off the circuit breaker in your room. You can also put plugs in the electrical outlets, because you can never be too careful. ;)
Great, thanks for the response. So, according to you, is it better to leave the switch at the back of the tower on "on" and just turn off the power strip?
